1. Why did you choose the US for your studies?
I chose to study in the U.S because I think it is the country that provides the most scholarship. As long as you are talented, you will be funded to go to college!
Other than that, I like the high quality of education provided in the U.S. The American education has known to be one of the best in the world. It focuses on building well rounded students instead of book worms. The balance in academic and extra curricular activities is something that I look for while pursuing my college education.
Besides, I am a science major and in my humble opinion it is in the frontier of scientific research. The U.S government has highly supported scientific research financially. I am able to actively involved in research with all the resources available.
2. How did you make it to study in the US for free? What made your scholarship application to stand out?
It has not been easy! I went through a lot of hurdles before I made it to the U.S. I applied to more than hundred universities in the U.S before I received a full scholarship to study in the U.S. Even though other schools accepted me and provided me scholarship, it was not enough to cover my educational and living expenses.
I think perseverance is the key! You have to email the admission officers to tell them about your financial hardship and your academic performance and see what they can do to help you. Even though most officers are friendly, there are some that are not, and there are some that has limited resources to provide you funding. Never give up and keep trying!
U.S education focuses on holistic evaluation of your application. They will look at your recommendation letters and personal statement in addition to your academic results. My involvement in leadership activities and high academic performance made me stand out.
3. How the US changed you as an individual during last few years?
I have changed so much throughout the years! I am more confident than before as I excel as good as my classmates. I realize that as long as you are willing to work hard you will reach there eventually. I believe that hard work and determination are the keys to success (in most cases).
I am able to widen my world views. U.S has large number of international students so I am able to meet people from around the world. I am globally and culturally aware, which is important in the globalized world.
I become more grateful, because I have received help from many people. And I need to use what I have learned to give back to the community. I believe that education and knowledge are meaningless unless you use it to make the world a better place.
