Details

A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE FOR A CHANGING WORLD

Schwarzman Scholars will build invaluable professional and personal connections in Beijing and beyond through a dynamic Student Life Program. This program is an essential part of leadership development and will expand students’ knowledge of China while introducing them to a broader global network.

LEARNING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Students will have the opportunity to pursue internships at prominent institutions, corporations and nonprofit organizations. These opportunities offer practical experience that advances students’ academic interests, builds professional relationships in China, and accelerates students' path to leadership.

Students will be matched to specific opportunities based on their concentrations and professional interests after their arrival in Beijing.

INVALUABLE MENTHORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Each student will also have the opportunity to work closely with a senior mentor. Leading members of the Beijing business, academic and government communities will help advance students’ professional goals and support personal growth. This combination of coursework and real-life experience will give students the skills to maximize their leadership potential wherever in the world their careers may take them.

EXPERIENCING THE REAL CHINA

Beyond daily life in Beijing, Schwarzman Scholars will travel throughout China to explore themes related to their academic concentrations and professional interests. Led by faculty and local guides, students will immerse themselves in different regions, where they will meet government, business and social leaders. From these trips, students will gain a more intimate understanding of the many opportunities and challenges stemming from China’s development and its role in the world.

MULTI-DIMENSIONAL LEADERSHIP TRAINING

Leadership development is woven throughout the Schwarzman Scholars program, both in its academics and in the student experience. To provide a foundation for the exposure students will receive from mentors and internships, the program offers a course focused specifically on leadership training.

In an environment that emphasizes interaction and collaboration, students will learn to cultivate broader perspectives, a key characteristic of successful leaders. All classes and activities will be designed for students to learn from each other, and to understand and appreciate their different backgrounds, views and strategies for confronting challenges.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants who are currently enrolled in undergraduate degree programs must be on track to successfully complete all degree requirements by August 1, 2025 before orientation begins. Applicants must demonstrate strong English skills, as all teaching will be conducted in English. If the applicant’s native language is not English, official English proficiency test scores must be submitted with the application. This requirement is waived for applicants who studied at an undergraduate institution where the primary language of instruction was English for at least three years of the applicant’s academic program.  The requirement will also be waived for applicants who have studied in English for three or more years at a Master’s degree level or higher.Acceptable test options are:

Many Chinese applicants to Schwarzman Scholars have had difficulty registering at English language test sites in Mainland China due to high demand. To ensure that talented applicants are not excluded in this first year, we will allow applicants from China to temporarily submit results from CET-6 or TEM-8, using the "additional information" field in the application form. If those candidates are on the shortlist to be invited as a semi-finalist for an interview, they will be required to complete a phone interview before semi-finalist decisions are made. If they are a finalist, their offer of admission will be conditional, and they will still be required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score above the minimum requirements for Schwarzman Scholars before March 1 of 2025.

This requirement is waived for applicants who graduated from an undergraduate institution where the primary language of instruction was English for at least three years of the applicant’s academic program.

THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ARE NOT PART OF MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Marital status. Married applicants may apply and will be at no disadvantage in the application process. Spouses/partners may accompany Schwarzman Scholars to Beijing, but Scholars are expected to live in the dormitory and participate fully in the program like single students.
