Overview

The Allianz Climate Risk Research Award supports scientific research that improves our understanding of climate change-related risks.

Details

Launched in 2017, the Allianz Climate Risk Award acknowledges and rewards young scientists whose works shed light on the nexus between climate change and the extreme weather events that threaten millions of livelihoods and present ways these populations could be better protected. It targets PhD candidates and Post-Doctoral researchers whose research focuses on:

  • Reducing the risk of extreme weather events that are intensified by climate change;
  • Fostering resilience by applying technological solutions.

Applications are usually received from all over the world. Ten candidates are shortlisted by a jury and their work is published in a Compendium. Out of the ten, four are invited to Munich, Germany, to present their research at the awards ceremony.

In addition to having all expenses paid for, all four finalists received cash prizes, ranging from EUR2,000 to EUR7,000 to support their research.

Timeline

  • Call for papers – July 1, 2024
  • Submission deadline – August 31, 2024
  • Announcement of the finalists – late September 2024
  • Award event – November 26, 2024

About us

The effects of climate change can already be felt today. Developing countries are especially affected by impacts such as drought, flooding and other extreme weather events. But also developed countries will need to better anticipate the upcoming risks. The insurance industry as professional risk manager can play an important role in supporting the assessment and reduction of these risks, as well as the transfer of these risks to capital markets via insurance solutions.

At Allianz, several departments are working towards integrating climate change aspects in our insurance business. You will be introduced to colleagues from Allianz Climate Solutions, Allianz Re Cat Research and Development Department, and Allianz Group Corporate Responsibility.
