The opportunity

We offer a wide range of internship programs across most of our departments, all designed to teach you functional industry skills and equip you with tools for long-term success. Many of these positions can be converted to full-time roles.

You will be busy from Day One. The program begins with a week-long orientation, and includes a robust menu of programming, including our annual case competition and our Speaker Series, with each session focusing on a different aspect of our culture. You’ll frequently engage with fellow interns and be able to explore more about CPP Investments, while gaining valuable exposure to senior leadership across the firm. You’ll also advance your knowledge and expertise through skills-based training and stimulating on-the-job assignments.

PROGRAMS

Discover Capital Markets

This program was developed specifically for women in undergraduate programs who are interested in quantitative analysis, and curious about broad business issues and career opportunities in capital markets and portfolio management.

Quantitative analysis uses mathematical and statistical modeling to better understand the behaviour and performance of a business, and making informed decisions through available data and technology.

We offer a formal training curriculum especially designed for this program, equipping students with industry background and technical skills (capital markets fundamentals, core financial concepts, Excel, VBA, Python, Bloomberg, etc.) and business training (general business acumen, business writing, presentation skills and relationship building). Formal training is complemented by on-the-job apprenticeship and mentorship. Students in this track benefit from meaningful networking and learning opportunities with global peers and the senior leadership team.

Discover Fundamental Investments

This program was developed specifically for women in undergraduate programs who are interested in business issues and curious about investment career opportunities in fundamental analysis.

Fundamental analysis involves research of a company’s financial statements to determine its profit and growth potential and risk profile, and form a view on the fair value of the company.

We offer a formal training curriculum especially designed for this program, equipping students with industry background and technical skills (private and capital markets fundamentals, accounting, financial modeling, etc.) and business training (general business acumen, business writing, presentation skills and relationship building). The formal training is complemented by on-the-job apprenticeship and mentorship. Students in this track benefit from meaningful networking and learning opportunities with peers and the senior leadership team.

Finance

This program offers four- or eight-month placements in the Finance department.

This program also offers a four- or eight-month placement to students thinking about pursuing their CPA designation within a CPA Ontario pre-approved team.

Fundamental Investments

The Fundamental Investments Program is a summer placement. Interns can join a team in one of the three departments that participate in the Program.

Participating teams cover a wide variety of investment strategies in private and public domains, as well as equity and credit. During the recruitment process candidates are considered for all groups, however, they complete the summer internship in only one group.

This program provides students access to classroom and on-the-job learning where they learn how to analyze and evaluate companies, and industries. Fundamental analysis involves research of a company’s financial statements to determine its profit and growth potential, risk profile, and form a view on the fair value of the company. Interns will also have the opportunity to assess a fund managers’ track record, team, strategy, and alignment construct to determine its future return potential.

Students are assigned a manager and mentor to support their classroom training (private and capital markets fundamentals, financial modeling, business writing, presentation skills, etc.) and help them apply their learnings in the working setting. Students in this track benefit from meaningful networking and learning opportunities with peers and the senior leadership team.

Public Affairs and Communications

Public Affairs and Communications is responsible for the organization’s communications programs and global public affairs, including relationships with domestic and foreign governments, media, and other diverse stakeholder groups. Interns learn continuously on the job and receive training from global industry experts. Students have a direct impact on both global and domestic activities and interact with key internal and external stakeholders, as well as leaders across the organization.

Quantitative Investing

Quantitative internship opportunities are offered throughout the year for students who have an interest in capital markets, portfolio management, analytics, and programming.

Participating teams are driven by quant decisions, and data analysis is weaved throughout the work they do. Using systematic, discretionary, or a hybrid of the two models, our teams work with large datasets to generate insights for trading and portfolio management. The internship opportunities within these groups provide exposure to the fundamentals of quantitative analysis, mathematical and statistical modeling, and making informed decisions with available data and technology.

Technology & Data

The Technology & Data groups deliver technology, public market operations, data and risk management support, and lead strategy development and business planning for the Fund. This Internship program provides students access to classroom and on-the-job learning using the latest technology. Interns receive continuous support through apprenticeship and mentorship throughout the term and have opportunities to participate in meaningful networking and learning opportunities with peers and our senior leadership team.
