Overview

Churchill Fellowships offer a diverse range of people from all walks of life an opportunity to travel overseas for four to eight weeks to explore a topic or issue that they are passionate about. We encourage applications from all sectors of the community and in any field or topic of interest.

No prescribed qualifications are required in order to apply for a Churchill Fellowship, and the topic of your proposed project is limitless, provided a willingness to share your findings with the Australian community is evident. Applicants are empowered to design their own projects to explore international best practice and innovation that can be applied in Australia.

Applying for a Churchill Fellowship 

Before you apply, we recommend that you read through the Application Guide and our frequently asked questions to ensure you are an eligible candidate and your project meets our requirements.

If you meet the eligibility requirements to apply for a Churchill Fellowship and you are motivated to travel overseas for four to eight weeks to explore a topic or issue that they are passionate about, and share the knowledge you gain when you return, we encourage you to apply.

If applying online presents difficulties, please contact the Trust’s National Office to discuss your situation as support or reasonable adjustment can be provided. Using a different method to apply can only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Information Sessions

Throughout February and March 2024 we will be delivering virtual information sessions about the Churchill Fellowship opportunity.

Attending an information session is no mandatory, however we strongly encourage you to attend and listen to some of our Churchill Fellows share their Fellowship experiences, impart insights on their fascinating projects and motivate you with what they have achieved since returning to Australia as well as provide you with helpful advice on how to apply.

Description of Ideal Candidate

  • Any Australian Citizen over the age of 18 can apply provided they can demonstrate a suitable level of achievement in the field of the proposed project and they are not currently enrolled in tertiary studies that closely relate to their overseas project.
  • Churchill Fellowships are for overseas travel only.
  • Only one Churchill Fellowship per lifetime!

Cost/funding for participants

Amount of Award. The value of every Fellowship is different as it is calculated based on the number of countries to be visited, the duration of the approved Fellowship and an estimated airfare. The average value of a Fellowship is 28,000 AUD.

Duration of Fellowships. The duration of a Churchill Fellowship is determined by the project aim and the length of time needed overseas to achieve this aim. A Fellowship is a minimum of 4 weeks and a maximum of 8 weeks. A longer itinerary can be applied for provided this is necessary to achieve the project aim. If called for interview applicants will be expected to justify the additional time needed overseas. Additional time outside of the approved Fellowship itinerary will be at the Fellow’s own expense.
