Overview
This course will help you get started as a writer, or develop as a writer, by enabling you to improve your existing skills and cultivate your imagination.
It will guide you through the process of writing, from brainstorming to writing to revising. Creative Writing in English course is led by acclaimed authors also experienced in teaching. In previous years, the course has been taught by Peter Robinson, Philip Gross, Kathy Page, Rory McLean, Tsitsi Dangarembga, Giles Foden, Philip Langeskov, Peter Salmon, Eric Langley and Margie Orford.

Do you find that walking or travelling or spending time in nature springs words and stories into your mind? This workshop will draw on this powerful inspiration, with stimulus activities designed to stretch and surprise you into new work. It will help you to craft fiction and non-fiction, write convincing characters and evoke settings.
Participants will spend time both outside and indoors – walking, writing and talking through ideas and will include guided writing activities. We will also spend time discussing key extracts from published writing and reflecting on each other’s work, with attention on its impact for readers.
This is an opportunity to concentrate on your own creativity for a week in a supportive environment with other people of similar interests. It will be suitable for both beginners and those already on a pathway who want to develop their writing skills further.
As Susan Sontag advised writers: ‘Love words, agonise over sentences, and pay attention to the world’. We will be sure to do all three.

Karen Connelly is a Canadian writer, poet and novelist.
PROGRAMME
The classes take place every day from 10 a.m to 4 p.m (except for the last day).
- Day 1: Following introductions, the focus will be on tuning up our senses and observational skills, and translating these into words and pages which communicate fresh ideas succinctly and powerfully to a reader.
- Day 2: We will explore the creation on the page of characters, whether they are fictional, real, or indeed oneself, including the writing of effective dialogue. We will take our characters for a short walk.
- Day 3: How to structure a narrative? We will consider journeys, the treatment of time, the ‘shape’ of stories, the ‘voice’ in which a narrative is embodied, and the challenges of writing beginnings and endings.
- Day 4: On a day trip to the island of Aegna, through our own responses to the place in a series of structured activities, we will consolidate what we have learnt in the first three days towards a new piece of island-based writing.
- Day 5: ‘The only kind of writing is rewriting’, Ernest Hemingway. Today we will embrace the need to craft and cut and re-see what we write in order to make it sing. Although this stage can seem an obstacle and is sometimes avoided, we will learn to relish the opportunity it brings.
- Day 6 (10 a.m till 1 p.m): This morning will concentrate on sharing and celebrating our writing and making commitments to develop further as writers in the future.

PARTICIPANTS
This summer course is suitable for all people who are interested in creative writing. During the course you will be expected to attend workshops and seminars, submit your work for peer review and create a portfolio of your own writing. The expected English language proficiency is C1 or equivalent (advanced proficiency).
The course is limited to 18-20 participants.
