Overview

The Eurasia-Pacific Uninet (EPU) is a network which establishes contacts and scientific partnerships between Austrian universities, universities of applied sciences, as well as other research institutions and member institutions in East Asia, Central Asia, South Asia and the Pacific region.

EPU offers scholarships, organizes projects between its member institutions and summer schools for anyone interested in China, holds regular plenary meetings and promotes scientific exchange through the establishment of joint research centers and schools.

The EPU network was founded in the year 2000 and has been strongly supported by the BMBWF and the OeAD. With more than 160 member institutions in 15 countries, the network promotes multilateral scientific cooperation, joint research projects, conferences as well as faculty and student exchange.

Eurasia-Pacific Uninet is the largest sovereign university network of its kind within Europe. Its goal is to support interdisciplinary scientific exchange between its member institutions through scholarships for Post Docs and Ph.D. students coming to Austria, projects, and summer schools.

With January 1, 2010 the OeAD-GmbH became the holding company for the Eurasia-Pacific Uninet administrative unit.

Eurasia-Pacific Uninet supports:

  • scientific, economic, and cultural relations between Austria and target countries

  • R&D activities of multinational companies

  • visiting professorships

  • reciprocal acknowledgement of study degrees and programs

Eurasia-Pacific Uninet supplies:

  • research scholarships for member institutions

  • contacts between government agencies, educational institutions and companies

  • intercultural expertise through intensive programs and courses

Eurasia-Pacific Uninet initiates:

  • joint research centers

  • joint schools for teaching, research and training

  • development of joint curricula and double-degree programs

  • research activities by means of workshops, seminars, converences and through the exchange of scientists among member institutions

Scholarships

The program aims at strengthening the student's ability to compete in the international market by means of study and research semesters, as well as teaching at member universities and research institutions. Furthermore, the project serves as a contribution to the internationalization of the science and technology-related economy.

Eligible fields of study/research include

  • technical sciences

  • natural sciences

  • agricultural sciences

  • medicine

  • environmental sciences

  • economic sciences (including tourism research)

  • humanities, and

  • social sciences, as well as

  • arts and music

Cost/funding for participants

Detailed type of grant: Semester and/or one-year grants, Research grants.

Duration: 

  • 1 to 9 months
  • Postgraduates: 1-9 months
  • Postdocs: 1-6 months

Grant benefit paid: 

Supplementary grant, own funds are required.

  1. Monthly grant rate: for graduates: EUR 1,050; for graduates with a PhD degree: EUR 1,150 
  2. Accommodation, health insurance: It is possible for OeAD scholarship holders to book accommodation (dormitory or apartment) with the OeAD Housing office. The monthly costs are: monthly rent: roughly EUR 250 to 600 (depending on the amenities); monthly administrative fee: EUR 18. OeAD scholarship holders need to have health insurance that is accepted by the Austrian authorities for the duration of their stay in Austria. The OeAD can help with taking out such insurance. The monthly costs can vary, at the moment you should calculate EUR 55 to 200 (depending on your age, scholarship category and state of health). Scholarship holders have to pay the costs for accommodation and insurance themselves. Applicants from non-EU/EEA countries who are planning a research stay of more than 6 months: If your monthly costs for accommodation in Austria exceed EUR 300, you may need to provide proof of additional funds to the Austrian residence authority when you apply for your residence permit. This figure may vary depending on your individual costs for health insurance and other liabilities.
  3. Grant holders do not have to pay tuition fees in Austria. They might have to hand in a request at the rector’s office of their respective host university and demonstrate that they are studying or doing research in the context of transnational EU, national or university mobility programs.
  4. Scholarship holders from non-European developing countries will also receive a travel costs subsidy of max. EUR 1,000.
