FRONTEX

Frontex is a cornerstone of the EU’s efforts to guarantee an area of freedom, security and justice. To help safeguard Europe’s internal security, Frontex has begun conducting regular vulnerability tests in all EU Member States, and has already shared its first findings with national authorities and EU institutions. Through its return operations, the agency is also playing an increasingly central role in migration enforcement, while at the same time fundamental rights protection is being strengthened in areas ranging from operational guidance through to return monitoring.

The new Frontex is more operational than ever. The agency currently has some 1,700 officers deployed at the EU’s sea, land and air borders, assisting EU Member States in surveillance, registration, finger printing and security checks. In case of a border emergency, Frontex now has a rapid reaction pool at its disposal composed of 1,500 officers, as well as additional sea vessels, aircraft, vehicles and other equipment. Frontex officers are also involved in search and rescue operations, which have led to the saving of 33,000 lives in the Central and Eastern Mediterranean between January and November 2017 alone.
