The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies is an institution of research and higher education dedicated to the study of world affairs, with a particular emphasis on the cross-cutting fields of international relations and development issues. Through our core activities, we aim to promote international cooperation and make a contribution to the progress of developing societies. Programme Content

Student can earn credits up to 30 ECTS by taking:

  • Dedicated courses on global issues (globalisation, international security, global governance, international organisations, etc.)
  • Up to two courses at the master’s level from a large range of themes and disciplines at the Institute 
  • Possibility to take one French language course
  • Panel discussions with international practitioners
  • Visits to international organisations such as the United Nations, UN Human Rights, UN Refugee Agency, World Trade Organization, World Health Organization, International Committee of the Red Cross, etc.
  • Mentoring programme and academic advice for graduate studies and career paths
  • Possibility to intern during the semester break

The programme is open to students who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree programme and who would like to engage in a study abroad semester in the field of international affairs.

A complete application file should include:

  • Online application form
  • Letter of recommendation from a professor
  • Transcript of grades of university studies to date
  • Certificate of English language proficiency (TOEFL IBT 100 points or IELTS 7.0, if non-English mother-tongue)

Admissions will be processed on a rolling basis and decisions will be communicated within four weeks of receipt of completed application file.

Description of Ideal Candidate

Eligible candidates should:

  • Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree programme
  • Have completed at least one full year of bachelor-level credit by the time of enrollment 
  • Have written approval from their home university to participate in the programme 
  • Have a solid school/academic file (GPA 3.0 or higher)
  • Demonstrate oral and written proficiency in English; proficiency in French is not required

Tuition fees

  • For the academic programme (eq to 30 ECTS): CHF 15,000
  • Admitted students will be required to pay 1,000CHF within 30 days of receipt of the confirmation of admission, to confirm their place.
