Details

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is one of the leading higher educational institutions in Germany and is situated in Berlin's unique and historical city center. With Humboldt Winter and Summer University (HUWISU), the university has offered an intense 2-4 week summer and winter program for over 10 years. It gives students the opportunity to explore Humboldt-Universität, the city of Berlin, and German culture.

HUWISU offers a great variety of interdisciplinary subject courses taught in English and German language courses. The courses target international undergraduates, Master's students, Ph.D. candidates, and recent graduates.

Annually, more than 600 students from all over the world study together in our HUWISU courses, where they make lasting friendships and benefit from unforgettable experiences in Berlin.
We welcome you to study in an international classroom and get to know our capital city and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin by experiencing the HUWISU program!

The Summer School in 2024 will take place from 17 June to 12 July (Session 1) and from 15 July to 9 August (Session 2). The course program will be available in December 2023.

Steps to apply

  1. Browse our course catalog  Summer on Campus, Winter on Campus, Online Campus and select the courses you are interested in. You can take more than one course if there is no overlap in your schedule. The possible combinations are displayed on the respective course page. The course tracks (see course structure under individual courses) show the timetable of the courses. A-, B- and C-Track courses can be combined. D-Track courses are standalones and cannot be combined with other courses. Considering the workload of each course, we suggest you to take no more than 2 courses per session. Of course, it is possible to participate in more than one session.  The application deadline varies from course to course. For more details, please refer to the individual course pages. Please note that the course may be fully booked before registration deadline is reached. We therefore recommend an early registration.  If the course you are interested in is fully booked, please contact the HUWISU team about our waiting list and further options.
  2. Apply online and create your own HUWISU account.
  3. Once you have completed your online registration, you will receive an automatically generated email with a link. By clicking on that link, you confirm your personal registration.
  4. If you have registered for an English subject course, you will be notified by email to log in to your account and upload a letter of motivation (max. 1 page). If applicable, proof of English or German language proficiency, as well as a copy of your student ID will additionally be required. Information about the content of the letter of motivation:
    1. Why do you want to participate in the HUWISU program?
    2. What a) personal and b) academic background qualifies you for the chosen course/s?
    3. What are your expectations on the chosen course/s?
    4. How do you plan to apply the knowledge learned during the HUWISU program after returning to your home country?
