About IHS

The Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) is a centre of urban expertise of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. Looking at cities from a multidisciplinary perspective, we train urban professionals from diverse backgrounds, provide consulting services to national and local governments worldwide, and engage in cutting-edge urban research. Bringing practical experience from real-life projects back to the classroom, we inspire collaboration and co-creation of urban knowledge. Together with our partners, we work at the forefront of urban development to improve the well-being of people living in cities across the globe.

Responsibilities

  • Support the organisation and implementation of educational activities
  • Prepare handbooks and manuals for courses
  • Conduct research on the urban environment, sustainability, green cities, green infrastructure and climate change issues
  • Develop and manage large data sets related to the urban environment, sustainability, green cities, green infrastructure and climate change issues
  • Support the general project implementation, including international communication, text writing and editing
  • Assist on project acquisition on the urban environment, sustainability, green cities, green infrastructure and climate change issues

Description of Ideal Candidate

General Requirements

  • The candidate must be a student at a Dutch or foreign university (with a residence permit for the Netherlands) in a graduate (Master) study programme that requires a work placement/internship at an international organisation like IHS.
  • The candidate must be in the process of finishing a Master programme related to the urban environment, sustainability, green cities, green infrastructure and climate change issues.

Specific Skills

  • Able to work in a diverse cultural and professional environment. International experience in a multicultural environment is an asset.
  • Creative and with a pro-active attitude in teamwork, but also able to work independently.
  • Able to multi-task and meet stringent deadlines
  • Strong organisational skills
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Strongly motivated
  • Excellent knowledge of GIS (ArcGIS or QGIS)
  • Excellent quantitative skills (statistics and econometrics) and knowledge of R and Python are an asset.

Terms & Conditions

  • IHS will establish an internship agreement that states the terms and conditions of the internship. This document needs to be signed by IHS, a representative of the intern's university and the intern themself. Candidates that cannot provide university approval for this agreement cannot be accepted.
  • The candidate must have a Dutch residence permit valid for the total period of the internship or be an EU citizen. Candidates without a permit cannot be accepted. Any other residence permits not issued by Dutch authorities or a permit from another European country is NOT valid for the Netherlands.
  • IHS and MUG students are ineligible to apply for the intern position.
  • The intern position is available in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, for at least three and a maximum of six months.
  • Full-time internships have a workload of 40 hours per week. Part-time internships (min 0.6 FTE) may be possible.
  • We offer compensation of 500 euros gross per month for master students (pro-rata for part-time internships).
