Overview

The Cooke Young Scholars Program is a selective five-year, pre-college scholarship for high-performing 7th grade students with financial need. It provides comprehensive academic and college advising, as well as financial support for school, Cooke-sponsored summer programs, internships, and other learning enrichment opportunities.

Program Experience

Educational advisers support Young Scholars to maximize high school experiences and to go on to thrive at the nation’s top-performing colleges. Our programming and support may include:

  • Identifying an appropriately rigorous high school.
  • Engaging in four-year planning and goal-setting.
  • Funding for academic and extracurricular opportunities, such as music and art lessons, supplemental academic classes and technology.
  • Annual summer programs, including two required Young Scholar programs.
  • Year-round Young Scholars community programming.
  • Networking opportunities with a high-achieving peer community.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is a private, independent foundation dedicated to advancing the education of exceptionally promising students who have financial need. The Foundation supports exceptional students from elementary school to graduate school through scholarships, grants, direct service, and knowledge creation and dissemination.

By offering the largest scholarships in the country, in-depth academic counseling and other direct services, the Cooke Foundation seeks to help high-performing, low-income students to develop their talents and excel educationally.

Cooke Scholars are selected from a national pool using such factors as exemplary academic achievement, financial need, grit, determination and social commitment. In addition to providing students both counseling and financial support from middle school to graduate school, the Cooke Foundation provides significant grants for noteworthy and innovative initiatives that support high-performing, low-income students.

Description of Ideal Candidate

To be considered for the Young Scholars Program, the applicant must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Grade level: Currently in 7th grade and/or entering 8th grade in the fall of 2024.
  • Academics: Earned all As and Bs in core academic subjects since beginning of 6th grade.
  • Financial Need – Demonstrate unmet financial need. We will consider applicants with family income up to $95,000. During the selection process, the Foundation will conduct a full financial review which will take into account all income and assets of the student and the student’s parents. The median family income of last year’s entering cohort of Cooke Young Scholars was approximately $40,000.
  • Location: Currently attending middle school in the U.S. and planning to attend high school in the U.S.

What are the selection criteria?

The Cooke Foundation reviews each application with assistance from a committee of education experts. The Foundation selects Cooke Young Scholars using the criteria below. While all criteria are scored, academic ability and achievement is the most heavily weighted criterion.

  • Academic ability and achievement: How does the applicant stand out from others in terms of their academic ability and achievement? (Eligible applicants must have earned all As and Bs since the beginning of 6th grade.)
  • Leadership: How does the applicant demonstrate initiative, serve as a positive role model, and contribute positively to the world around them?
  • Persistence: How does the applicant show determination toward accomplishing their goals and overcoming challenges?
  • Financial Need: Demonstrate unmet financial need. We will consider applicants with family income up to $95,000.
