What is MUN?

Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is an academic simulation of the United Nations. Participants, who are referred to as delegates, adopt the persona of designated country ambassadors during simulated discussions. Delegates must research their countries’ position on a predetermined global issue and represent the country accordingly.

Participating in a Model United Nations (MUN) conference is a great way for English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) and English-as-a-Foreign-Language (EFL) students to actively improve their English language skills and foster a deeper understanding of global issues, politics, and sustainability.  MUN conferences are also an excellent way for these students to improve on a multitude of 21st century skills that are not often practiced in a traditional classroom setting, but which are essential for their future careers.

About JEMUN

The Japan English Model United Nations (JEMUN) conference organizing team is dedicated to advancing the understanding of the United Nations and contemporary international issues in English. JEMUN’s mission is to positively affect the lives of the participants and prepare them to be better global citizens through quality educational experiences in English that emphasize collaboration and cooperative resolution of conflict.  The JEMUN Organizing Committee envisions a world comprised of civically engaged people who strive for peaceful, multi-lateral conflict resolution and equitable, sustainable human development.

At each JEMUN conference, high school and university-aged students from around the world experience cooperative, hands-on learning allowing them to confront a topic in English from the perspective of their assigned country or as a JEMUN Journalist. Through these experiences, during preparation and in committee sessions, participants will develop an appreciation of differing viewpoints, the frustration of negotiation, the rewards of cooperation, and a broader view of the human side of international relations and diplomacy.

The yearly conference theme is chosen after careful and extensive deliberation and discussion by the JEMUN Organizing Committee. Each meeting room agenda deals with an issue of great importance to the world that needs to be addressed with comprehensive and innovative solutions; that serve as a basis for resolutions in the future.

JEMUN participants consist of Japanese university students, international students studying in Japan, and foreign students from abroad.

Conference Theme

The 2024 JEMUN conference will offer 4 meeting rooms for university students and 2 meeting rooms for high school students to participate as country delegates or journalists. Each meeting room is connected to the overall JEMUN conference theme, Rethinking Tourism. In each meeting room there are four specialized discussion groups referred to as committee groups.

When you register and pay for the JEMUN conference, you will be assigned to represent a country in a specific committee group in one of the meeting rooms.
