Overview

LEAD has a vision of a sustainable world where the leadership potential of people and communities is developed, they are able to collaborate across sectors and cultures, and they can find and deliver sustainable solutions at the local and global level.

Details

At the core of LEAD's network is its training and capacity-building program.  Known as 'The Fellows Program', applicants who are accepted will attend two one-week sessions in Canada and one one-week session at an international location selected by LEAD International.  Through this program, participants will deepen their understanding of global/local sustainability challenges and develop skills needed to deal with the challenges of global and local sustainability.

Values & Principles
In delivering our mission, LEAD will operate according to the following values and principles:

  • A sense of urgency.  Humanity is on an unsustainable path, and rapid change is essential to achieve sustainability
  • Recognition that leadership can take place at many levels, and that everyone has a potential leadership role to play.
  • Belief in a cross-sectoral, cross-cultural collaborative approach.
  • Mutual respect of different perspectives, cultures and backgrounds
  • The importance of inspiring others and listening to others.
  • A belief that sustainable development is achievable as well as desirable
  • A commitment to social equity and justice, which together with environmental responsibility and economic progress, are at the heart of sustainable development.

The Steps

1. LEADERSHIP SKILLS

Skills development in the Canadian sessions features experiential learning with a focus on leadership (qualities and capabilities), being able to think differently in order to foster change within the context of sustainability (including systems thinking), and engaging stakeholders in ‘win-win’ outcomes (mutual gains negotiations). These major elements are complemented with exercises to help ‘get your message across’ as an agent of change in the arena of sustainability. Those completing the four days of local workshops become a LEAD Canada Associate.

Fees: $999 (plus applicable taxes)
Duration: 4 days

2. COMMUNITY CHALLENGES

Community Challenges allow participants to tackle sustainability issues through a hands-on facilitated learning process that allows them to apply their skills and experience to solve a real-life community issue. In the challenge model, people from the local community work with LEAD participants to co-create solutions for a wide range of social, economic and environmental challenges. Those completing the five day challenge become a LEAD Canada Fellow.

Fees: $999 (plus applicable taxes)
Duration: 5 days

3. INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

The International Experience (IE) takes the challenge one step further by further enhancing participant’s leadership skills and capabilities in an international challenge setting. Not just for those with an interest in working internationally, the IE provides participants with a whole new perspective on solving the sustainability challenges that communities face around the world. Those completing the six day international experience become a LEAD International Fellow.

Fees: $1,299 (plus applicable taxes)
Duration: 6 days
