Overview

The NATO Defense College (NDC) currently offers four fellowships each year in the field of defense and security policy research related to NATO and its Partners. The NDC Resident Fellowship Programme has been in place since 1993 and since the Programme’s inception, the NDC has awarded more than 130 fellowships.

  • Partnership for Peace (PfP) Fellowship Programme;
  • Mediterranean Dialogue (MD) Fellowship Programme;
  • Other Military Cooperation/Partners Across the Globe Fellowship Programme (OMC/PAG);

Description of the Programme

In place since 1993, and counting over 130 alumni, the NDC Resident Fellowship Programme currently consists of four sub-programmes for a total of eight fellowships per year. It is designed for international security scholars/academics/researchers of NATO Allies and its Partners.

The Resident Fellowship Programme is under the supervision of Dr Thierry Tardy, Director, Research Division.

Objectives

The overarching objective of the Resident Fellowship Programme is to promote research and policy analysis in areas of particular interest to NATO Member States, as well as to its partners.

During their fellowship, fellows are required to:

  • conduct research on their research project and write a research essay;
  • present their research project before completing their fellowship;
  • act as mentors of a committee’s study project in the NDC Senior Course in case of need;
  • contribute to NDC research activities.

Obligations and responsibilities

The Resident Fellowship Programme is under the direct supervision of the Director, Research Division.

Responsibilities of the Fellows include – but are not be limited to – the following:

  • Fellows are requested to implement their research project, i.e. conduct research on their proposed topic and write a research essay while being at the NDC;
  • Fellows are requested to present their work/research before completing their fellowship at the NDC;
  • Fellows may be requested to act as Mentors of a Committee’s Study Project in the NDC Senior Course;
  • Fellows may be asked to contribute to NDC research activities on a case-by-case basis.  

Application and selection procedure

Candidates must fill in the on-line registration form, and send separately in a single pdf file a CV, ID (Passport or national ID), and a short biography to the following email address: fellowships@ndc.nato.int

The research proposal must have a relevance to NATO’s current agenda and future (Research proposals unrelated to NATO or incomplete applications will not be taken into consideration).

Selected candidates are notified in writing.

The selection process considers the applicant’s CV (publication and previous research experience), as well as his/her research proposal and how relevant to NATO it is. Please note that the NDC Research Division cannot provide comments and feedbacks on applicants’ proposals both during and after the selection process.

Eisenhower (EISW) Fellowship Programme

The EISD named after the College's founder, General Dwight Eisenhower, is a research opportunity offered to scholars of NATO member states:

  • Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States.

Partnership for Peace (PfP) Fellowship Programme;

Two fellowships are made available each year for applicants from PfP countries:

  • Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Finland, Georgia, Ireland, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Moldova, Serbia, Sweden, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.

Mediterranean Dialogue (MD) Fellowship Programme

Two fellowships are made available each year for applicants from MD countries:

  • Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Mauritania, Morocco, Tunisia.

Other Military Cooperation/Partners Around the Globe Fellowship Programme (OMC/PAG);

One fellowship is made available each year for applicants from OMC / PaG countries:

  • Afghanistan, Australia, Iraq, Japan, Pakistan, Republic of Korea, New Zealand, and Mongolia.

Cost/funding for participants

NDC Eisenhower (EISW) Fellowship Programme

  • Each Fellow receives a stipend to cover his/her travel and living expenses while being at the NDC (please refer to the Terms and Conditions explaining the differences between Fellowships).

Partnership for Peace (PfP) Fellowship Programme

  • Each fellowship lasts five months and each fellow receives a stipend to cover his/her travel expenses and the costs of his/her stay in Rome.

Mediterranean Dialogue (MD) Fellowship Programme

  • Each fellowship lasts five months and each fellow receives a stipend to cover his/her travel expenses and the costs of his/her stay in Rome.

Other Military Cooperation/Partners Around the Globe Fellowship Programme (OMC/PAG);

  • This fellowship lasts five months and the fellow receives a stipend to cover his/her travel expenses and the costs of his/her stay in Rome.
