Overview

In recognition of Ralph P. Hummel’s intellectual contributions to the fields of Public Administration, Social Policy, Political Science, and Organizational Theory, The Institute of Applied Phenomenology in Science and Technology (IAP) has established the Ralph P. Hummel Doctoral Research Scholarship Fund (Scholarship Fund) to be used in support of interpretative doctoral dissertation research. The Public Administration Theory Network endorses and supports the establishment of this fund.

Details

The scholarship fund will be used to support the methodological portion of dissertation research and may include matching support associated with:

  • Organizing and conducting observations and interviews. 
  • Theory building related activities, including partially developed research presentations at peer reviewed theory based conferences.

Applicants are asked to submit a 1500 word summary of their dissertation prospectus along with an approved prospectus defense signed off by their committee.  Further, applicants must include a narrative of not more than 500 words describing how Ralph Hummel’s contributions have helped the applicant in thinking differently about their research and field of study and/or helped them explore their methodology differently.  Applications will be reviewed annually and are due on June 1st.  Applications will be reviewed by an internal review board and notification of awards issued no later than June 30th.

Applicants for the Ralph Hummel Scholarship Fund are limited to doctoral students working on dissertation projects in the areas of Public Administration, Social Policy and Planning, Political Science, and/or Organizational Theory with a theoretical focus on knowledge analytics, applied theory and/or phenomenology.

Awards winners will be asked to acknowledge that a portion of the funds used to support their research came from the Ralph P. Hummel Doctoral Research Scholarship Fund at the Institute of Applied Phenomenology in Science and Technology and the Public Administration Theory Network.
