As a refugee in Germany you are entitled under the specific legal requirements to study and to apply for a scholarship – for instance with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung. We are looking forward to supporting your professional and personal development and are happy to welcome talented new fellows who actively enrich and contribute to the progress of our society.

Scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students

Our scholarship enables committed young students to focus profoundly on their studies and to prepare for their future careers in the public and the private sector, especially in academia, state institutions and international organizations, civic society, media or in the cultural sphere.

Scholarship for PhD candidates

With our PhD scholarships we support socially and/or politically committed postgraduate students with excellent academic results, preparing these to take over responsibility and leadership respectively.

How do I apply and what is important for a successful application?

Scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students

Please apply online on campus.kas.de until 15 January or 15 July annually. You are required to upload the following application documents:

  • written out (not tabular), curriculum vitae of up to three pages,
  • current passport photo,
  • certified copy of the admission letter from your German university,
  • letter of assessment of your academic skills (e.g. by a professor at your university),
  • copy of the transcript of your university grades and courses (or single course certificates),
  • matriculation certificate,
  • copy of all your academic diploma and training certificates.

Scholarship for PhD candidates

Please apply online on campus.kas.de until 15 January or 15 July annually. You are required to upload the following application documents

  • proof of advanced German language skills (at least equivalent to Goethe-Zertifikat C1). A language certificate is required for the application.
  • application form with your professional and personal development and your social and/or political engagement,
  • written out, signed and dated curriculum vitae (4.000 - 6.000 characters, incl. spaces),
  • signed and dated curriculum vitae in tabular form,
  • copy of the admission letter from your German university,
  • certified copy of your examination certificate/university diploma,
  • two letters of assessment of your academic skills by your supervisor and another university professor (both entitled to supervise a doctoral thesis). The letters are not to be older than six months before the date of application deadline. The letters of assessment have to be submitted by you.
  • proposal of your PhD project (five to ten pages, 1,5 line spacing, 12 pt. Font, literature appendix).

Your proposal should fulfill the following criteria:

  • high actuality und social and/or political relevance of your topic,
  • overview of the main problems and solution approaches,
  • research design and methods,
  • tentative timeframe of your PhD project.

Requirements: 

  • Academic achievements: You have completed your schooling and studies with above-average grades.
  • PhD research project: You have a clear objective. You are familiar with the current state of research, main arguments and methodologies in your subject area. Your proposal reflects this academic competence and is convincing in terms of both content and language. Your PhD supervisor is familiar with your proposal and supports your application.
  • Values: You identify with the political stances represented by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.
  • Volunteering: You are involved in voluntary work in political, social and cultural areas.
  • Initiative: You are willing to actively participate in our scholarship programmm.
  • Open-mindedness: You are interested in a broad range of topics beyond your reserach area. You also appreciate the exchange within a multicultural environment.

What are the selection criteria for obtaining a scholarship?

As a scholarship applicant to the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung you should possess the following qualities and abilities:

  • open mindedness, high commitment and wide range of interests,
  • above average learning or academic achievements at school or university,
  • social engagement and willingness to assume social and political responsibility,
  • identification with our values and our views.

Under which legal conditions am I entitled to a scholarship in Germany?

Your residence status plays a crucial role in whether and when you are entitled to a KAS-Scholarship:

  • You are a recognised refugee (i.e. as entitled to asylum, granted refugee status or subsidiary protection). You can apply irrespective of how long you have already been in Germany.
  • You are a “tolerated” refugee or holder of a specific humanitarian residence permit. You can apply only after 15 months from the date you originally applied for asylum in Germany.
  • Your application for asylum is still being processed. You may not yet apply. You are eligible, however, for support through the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act.

What benefits do I receive from the scholarship program?

Our financial and non-financial services differ according to the type of scholarship.

Scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students

  • financial support (depending on your income or the income of your parents) up to 752 Euros per month plus 300 Euro for study-related expenses (books, writing material etc.),
  • wide range of seminars on salient political, economic, academic and cultural topics,
  • access to an extended network of fellow scholarship holders and alumni,
  • career counselling and support with your first steps into the labor market.

Scholarship for PhD candidates

  • financial support of 1350 Euros per month plus 100 Euro for research-related expenses (further allowances possible),
  • individual support and consultations in all matters regarding your PhD and scholarship by the staff of the Graduate Student Support Department of the KAS as well as by special academic advisors at your university,
  • wide range of seminars on salient political, economic, academic and cultural topics,
  • intensive exchange and exclusive access to professional contacts through our network of scholarship holders and over 17000 alumni,
  • encounters with personalities from the public sector,
  • professional career counselling and support with the first steps into the labor market.
