For applicants from Sub-Saharan African countries with an excellent academic record the DRD offers a limited number of DAAD merit scholarships per year.

Scholarships are available for full-time students of

  • the MA in Development Studies
  • the Master in Public Administration
  • the MA in Development Management 
    (separate online application platform, access and guidelines via "How to apply" section of the Bochum programme or via the course homepage)
  • the different PhD options at the centre (PhD UWC)

MA in Development Studies (MADS)

The MA in Development Studies is offered at the Institute of Social Development (ISD) at UWC. The course is designed for those planning a career in the field of economic and social development as policy-makers, activists, administrators, developers, researchers or teachers at universities. Annually about 50 students from 15-20 different countries register either for the Honours or Masters programme in Development Studies.

Successfull students of the Masters programme will be awarded the MA in Development Studies of UWC. Excellent students can receive the MA in Development Management degree of Ruhr-University Bochum as a second degree if they fulfil additional requirements (see 2nd degree option for further information).

The MA in Development Studies starts every year. Applicants with an excellent academic record (average upper second or first class grade) will have the opportunity to apply for a DAAD scholarship for their studies (see scholarship section for more information). Furthermore, participants will be given the opportunity to apply for a study period at Ruhr-Universiy Bochum in Germany, which can be supported through a mobility scholarship of the Centre.

The SA-German Centre for Development Research offers generous two year DAAD merit scholarships for Masters degrees (MA or MEcon) in Development Studies at the ISD (Institute for Social Development), School of Government, University of the Western Cape in Cape Town. 

Master in Public Administration (MPA)

The School of Government's Masters in Public Administration (MPA) offers students a balanced and relevant mix of practical and theoretical skills. It is also a multi-disciplinary degree, drawing widely on the skills and experience of the School's cognate departments. In the first year of the programme students are provided with a solid foundation in the theory and practice of governance, public policy and public administration, as well as in a range of analytical, practical, communication and research skills. In the second year, they will work under supervision to produce a mini-thesis, and attend and make presentations at research seminars.

Successfull students of the Masters programme will be awarded the degree Master in Public Administration of UWC. Excellent students can receive the MA in Development Management degree of Ruhr-University Bochum as a second degree if they fulfil additional requirements (see 2nd degree option for further information).

The MPA starts every year. Applicants with an excellent academic record will have the opportunity to apply for a DRD scholarship for their studies (see scholarship section for more information). Furthermore, participants will be given the opportunity to apply for a study period at Ruhr-Universiy Bochum in Germany, which can be supported through a mobility scholarship of the CDR.

MA in Development Management (Bochum Programme, MADM) 

The MA in Development Management (Bochum Programme) is offered at UWC since 2002 and now constitutes part of the CDR. It is a twin course of the Master's Programme in Development Management at the Institute of Development Research and Development Policy of Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, with respect to curriculum, lecturers and the degree awarded.

The MA degree in Development Management of Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, will be awarded to successful students. Excellent students have the additional opportunity to apply for a UWC Master's degree offered under the umbrella of CDR. See 2nd degree option for further information.

The application deadline for this intake is 30th December 2024. Selection results will be communicated end of January 2025.

The MADM at UWC includes a summer school and an internship period in Germany. After completion of course work of the first semester and participation in German language classes you will have the opportunity to take part in a Summer School on Research Methods and Development Practice at Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany, between mid September and mid October. During this Summer School you will meet the students of the twin programme in Bochum. Apart from coursework the Summer School usually includes a seminar on Inter-cultural Communication and Team Building as well as some excursions for you to get more familiar with Bochum, the Region and Germany. The Summer School will be followed by an internship period of about two months with a German development organization or a corporation in the private sector.

The Centre for Development Research offers generous three year DAAD merit scholarships for PhD students in Development Studies, Public Policy or Public Administration at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town.

Requirements for application and application procedure

  • Scholarship applicants are adviced to carefully read about the specific entry requirements and course application procedure of the programme of their choice. The information is available from the respective programmes sections. In addition to programme requirements, all applicants have to meet the following requirements:
  • Applicants should be from Sub-Sahara Africa
  • Applicants should have an outstanding academic record - at least 70% for your last degree
  • Applicants should apply within 6 years of having completed their previous degree
  • The study must have been completed at an internationally recognised university
  • The previous degree (Baccalaureus or Master) should have been an academic discipline which is related to Development Studies or Public Administration
  • South African students are required to have an honours degree in order to be admitted to a Masters degree course. Other students need the equivalent of a 4 year undergraduate degree
  • Applicants must provide evidence of proficiency in English, both written and spoken. This can be TOEFL test or a similar standard test or a letter from an academic institution
  • Work and/or voluntary experience in your field of interest would be a recommendation
  • Women are encouraged to apply
  • South African students are encouraged to apply
  • Applicants must be able to study fulltime at the UWC for the required period.

Cost/funding for participants

Scholarships include monthly allowances of 650 Euro plus travel allowances for Master candidates and 900 Euro plus travel allowances for PhD candidates. Tuition and registration fees are covered by the Scholarship Programme.
