The conference will take place in Cagliari, the most important city of Sardinia, with a metropolitan area of about half a million inhabitants. The capital of the island has a soul consisting of a millenary history, culture, nature, beach tourism and nightlife, an attractive mix that fascinates the visitor, charmed by the views of Castello, the ramparts and the Roman remains, the Sardinian sea, as well as by the dynamism of a surprisingly lively city.

Overview

EICS is a yearly international conference devoted to engineering usable and effective interactive computing systems. Most of the research work presented at EICS revolves around methods, processes, techniques and tools that support specifying, designing, developing and deploying interactive systems. The conference proceedings are published by the ACM and appear in the ACM Digital Library.

Details

Philosophy

Every ACM specialized SigCHI conference has a main theme. For EICS we want to gather people that aim to improve the ways we build interactive systems. Building interactive systems is a multi-faceted and challenging activity, involving a plethora of different persons and roles. Especially in the domain of HCI, where we continuously push the edge of what is possible, we need the appropriate processes, tools and methods to build reliable, useful and usable systems that help us cope with the ever increasing complexity of work and life. EICS primary goal is to provide a venue for novel contributions in this direction.

We seek for cutting edge research on engineering interactive systems. In engineering, beyond user testing, there is a need to worry about systematic validation and verification. Yet to make EICS a vivid and valuable forum, we will urge our community and reviewers to value and promote cutting edge research when selecting papers rather than focusing on completeness and fully proven approaches.

History

EICS might well be the longest running HCI conference in the field. Although it only has been an ACM SigCHI sponsored conference since 2009, EICS is a continuation and merge of a series of conferences, symposiums and workshops -- most notably the IFIP supported conference on Engineering HCI (EHCI) -- that shared a common interest: the engineering aspects of HCI. The annual workshops on Design, Specification and Verification of Interactive Systems (DSV-IS) and on Task, Models and Diagrams for UI Design (TaMoDia) were also merged into the EICS conference series, as well as the tri-annual International Conference on Computer-Aided Design of User Interfaces (CADUI).

Overview

EICS 2024 is the sixteenth international ACM SIGCHI conference devoted to engineering interactive computing systems and their user interfaces, addressing one or more software quality factors, such as usability, user experience, reliability, security, etc.

Work presented at EICS covers all stages of the engineering life-cycle of interactive systems - inception, requirements, design, specification, coding, data analytics, validation and verification, deployment and maintenance. EICS has the longest tradition of bringing together researchers who contribute to better ways of creating interactive computing systems, stemming from the conference on command languages in the seventies. The conference is best known for rigorously contributing and disseminating research results that hold the midst in between user interface design, software engineering and computational interaction.

EICS focuses on models, languages, notations, methods, techniques and tools that support designing, developing, validating and verifying interactive systems. The conference brings together people who study or practice the engineering of interactive systems, drawing from design, HCI, software engineering, requirements engineering, software development, modeling, and programming. Submissions advance the state of the art of the engineering of interactive systems.

The conference proceedings are published by the ACM and appear in the ACM Digital Library. The full paper are published in the journal PACM EICS series. Further information at https://eics.acm.org/pacm/.

Submissions and topics

Submissions can be done through http://new.precisionconference.com

More information about the new PACM-HCI (EICS series) review and publication process can be found at http://eics.acm.org/pacm.

Topics

EICS focuses on models, languages, notations, methods, techniques and tools that support designing and developing interactive systems. The Conference brings together people who study or practice the engineering of interactive systems, drawing from HCI, Software Engineering, Requirements Engineering, Conceptual Modelling, CSCW, Ubiquitous / Pervasive Systems. Submissions are invited that advance the state of the art of the engineering of interactive systems.
Topics include but are not limited to:

  • Modelling and analysis of interaction and interactive systems
  • Processes for engineering interactive systems (e.g., design, implementation, prototyping, evaluation, verification and validation, testing)
  • Integrating interaction design into the software development process
  • Requirements engineering for interactive systems
  • Specification of interactive systems (methods, principles and tools)
  • Software architectures for interactive systems
  • Frameworks, toolkits, and APIs for interactive systems (e.g., API usability, interaction-driven API design)
  • Domain-specific languages for interactive systems
  • Formal methods within interactive systems engineering
  • Modelling and analysis of users’ activities
  • Engineering innovative interactive applications (e.g., adaptive, tangible, touch and multitouch input, voice, gesture, EEG, multimodal input, mobile and wearable systems)
  • Engineering hardware/software integration in interactive systems (e.g., fabrication and maker processes, physical computing, etc.)
  • Engineering user experience (e.g., fun, affective)
  • Engineering complex interactive systems (e.g., large datasets, large communities, enterprise systems, collaborative systems)
  • Engineering interactive systems for various user categories (e.g., children, elderly, people with disabilities)
  • Certification issues of interactive systems
  • New datasets and evaluation data relevant for engineering interactive systems

Submission Information

The reviewing process for full papers follows the Proceedings of the ACM (PACM) model. The submission and review process will take place three times annually, and accepted papers will be published in issues of the PACM on Human-Computer Interaction journal. More can be found at http://eics.acm.org/pacm.

The full papers format is the single column template as described here (Section 2). The final outcome format (acm small) is provided here (see Overleaf template).

Submissions can be done through http://new.precisionconference.com.

Venue

EICS will be hosted at the Computational Foundry at the Bay Campus of Swansea University in South Wales.

Swansea's foundations are in the heart of early industrial development in South Wales, and was known as Copperopolis. However, it also sits alongside miles of beaches and is at the edge of the Gower Pennnsula an area of national scenic beauty and environmental interest.

Tha Computational Foundry is a 32.5 million pound partnership between Swansea University, the Welsh Government and European Regional Development Fund, to create a centre that promotes world leading digtal research that makes a difference to society across the region, nation and world.

Description of Ideal Candidate

Following the PACM journal model, EICS 2024 has no strict page limit on full papers submissions. Authors are encouraged of making sure that contributions are thoughtfully edited, carefully structured and as concise as necessary. As a rough estimate EICS PACM successful submissions are usually around 10,000 words.
