With the financial support of the Belgian Directorate for Development Co-operation (DGD), ITM offers a number of fellowships to applicants from developing countries. Admission to a program/course is a prerequisite for, but not a guarantee of, a scholarship.
How do you apply for a DGD scholarship?
As stated higher, scholarships can only be awarded to candidates who fulfil all academic admission criteria, including the course language proficiency check.
Note: the language proficiency requirement for English, as stated in the course descriptions, is a TOEFL 580 (paper-based), 230 (computer-based) or 88 (internet-based), IELTS 6.5 or equivalent (ITM TOEFL Code = 7727).
During the online application process applicants can download a DGD scholarship application form. ITM only accepts scholarship applications as part of a course application file.
ITM and DGD will jointly award the available scholarships among the academically highest ranked candidates. Beyond the eligibility criteria for a scholarship (nationality, home address/domicile and age), additional relative selection criteria (as defined by DGD) apply:
- Employment characteristics and or prospects, as per declaration of an employer:
- Likely professional (re-)integration after following the course
- Employment in a context where the learnings can be readily applied
- Preferably employment in a research institute, a higher education institution, the public sector, the social economy, a small or medium-sized enterprise (SME) or in a non-governmental organisation
- Personal motivation
- Gender: at equal qualification, preference for female scholarship candidates
- Preferably not have been awarded a DGD scholarship in the past and not yet have studied in a high-income country

Who can apply for a DGD scholarship?
Those who are a citizen from, and are actually living in, a low- or middle-income country as defined in the OECD-DAC list can apply for a scholarship sponsored by the Belgian Directorate General for Development Cooperation (DGD). These candidates can only apply if they are less than 46 years old at the end of the course or at graduation.
Note:
- Candidates with an second citizenship from a high income country (e.g. through a double nationality) or candidates who are employed in a high income country or have been for more than one year in the preceding three years, are not eligible for a DGD scholarship.
- A majority of scholarships, but not all, will be awarded to nationals from the countries defined as priority countries by the Belgian Directorate for Development Cooperation (see list below).

What is included in a DGD scholarship?
DGD scholarships cover travel, tuition, insurances and livelihood. This applies to both master programme and short course scholarships. A limited number of scholarships is available to follow courses or course components (modules) outside ITM in part-time study tracks, in the framework of credit mobility, or at partner institutions within the framework of a joint programme.
