Overview

The Fulbright Fellowship is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. The program was established in 1946 under legislation introduced by then-Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Approximately 318,000 “Fulbrighters,” 119,800 from the United States and 197,600 from other countries, have participated in the Program since its inception more than seventy years ago.

Details

The NAF-Fulbright Grant brings scholars from the Netherlands and the United States to the United States and the Netherlands respectively to pursue opportunities to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns. The exchange between the two counties follows in the NAF’s mission of strengthening the ties between the two countries. The NAF currently provides 12 Open Study/Research awards, 1 specialized award in Pediatric Cancer Research and 1 specialized award in Flood Management. (Fulbright Awards for US Scholars)

DUTCH STUDENTS

Fellowships are awarded to Dutch graduate students for an academic year of study and/or research in the United States. Candidates are pre-selected by the Fulbright Center in Amsterdam. Application forms are available on its web site (www.fulbright.nl).

Description of Ideal Candidate

For Dutch Students

  • The NAF provides fellowships to Dutch graduate students for an academic year of study and/or research in the United States.
  • The NAF awards the Fellowships to candidates pre-selected by the Fulbright Center in Amsterdam.
  • Chosen applicants are notified in May of each year.

For U.S. Students

  • Applications will be considered from well-qualified candidates (BS/BA graduates, master’s and doctoral candidates, and young professionals and artists) in all fields.
  • The proposed projects must be carried out in Dutch institutions of higher learning or by using Dutch archival sources. 
  • Candidates obtain their own placements and must furnish proof of acceptance from an academic institution or letters of affiliation from appropriate specialists to be considered for a grant.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
