Based in Rio de Janeiro and with a US 501[c][3] charitable status, Catalytic Communities (CatComm) is an empowerment, communications, think tank, and advocacy NGO working since 2000 on behalf of Rio’s favelas at the intersection of sustainable community development, human rights, local-global networks, communications, and urban planning. CatComm supports and empowers residents of informal settlements, evolving strategically to support their needs as they arise.
Details
Internships require a 20-30 hour/week (15 hours is accepted in some cases) commitment whereas volunteer positions vary depending on volunteer availability and organizational need. Interns are expected to participate in weekly staff meetings and act as part of the staff, whereas volunteers are invited to monthly volunteer meetings. Interns are assigned larger projects with various components, and are expected to produce documented work every two weeks, whereas volunteers are asked to provide support on an ad hoc basis based on a specific applied skill. No matter how you get involved, working with us you will learn about community organizing, affordable housing, inclusive planning and human rights 'from the inside' in the rapidly-transforming developing city context that is Rio de Janeiro today.
Any questions, please email us at volunteer@catcomm.org. And once again, thank you for seeking us out and sharing your skills and passion on behalf of Rio's favelas. We look forward to working with you to affect urban change on behalf of Rio de Janeiro's communities, and increasingly serve as a model for inclusive integration of cities around the world.
We do not always respond to new internship requests on a timely basis. This is because we have three general "seasons" when we welcome new intern groups: February, May/June and September. So normally we reach out to new interns in November, April, and August, respectively.
