Overview

In 2024 we continue pursuing the idea of intensive summer programme for the undergraduate and early graduate students, where advanced lectures are given by experts in the fields.

This year we are for the first time organizing two summer schools in parallel. One of the schools is on High Energy Theory and another one on Cosmology.

Details

  • The aim: The schools aims to provide an intensive and thorough courses on a broad range of topics in the field of high energy theory and cosmology. The schools are not limited only to lectures, but will also include daily discussion sessions, problem solving and independent work.
  • For whom: The schools are intended for senior undergraduate and early graduate (MSc) students mainly from the region of Southeast Europe. However, all lectures will be given in English, so we also welcome students from anywhere abroad. Exceptional younger students and interested graduate students will also be considered.
  • By whom: Lectures will be given by senior PhD students, postdocs, but also by some senior researchers. Lecturers come from various European and US institutions.

Topics

  • Aspects of Quantum Field Theory at Finite Temperature
  • Introduction to Conformal Field Theories
  • Black Hole Physics
  • Introduction to AdS/CFT correspondence
  • 2d Quantum Gravity

ABOUT US

Petnica Summer Institute (PSI) is founded on a common practice of Petnica Science Center: education of students by other students! Just as high school pupils in ordinary Petnica programs are taught and mentored by undergraduate students, PSI aims to provide lectures to undergraduate and early graduate students by senior PhD students, young postdocs and researchers. PSI is organised every summer in Petnica Science Center and it covers wide range of topics in theoretical physics and astrophysics.

One of the main objectives of PSI is to bring together young students of physics and astronomy from the region of Balkans and give them an opportunity to meet each other and together learn about recent developments in theoretical (astro)physics from their senior colleagues from all around the world. With a long history of organising similar programs, Petnica Science Center is a right place for such event. In a stimulating and informal environment our participants can fully benefit form exchanging ideas, learning from each other and creating stronger bonds within the region and between the region and the leading European and the US research institutions.

Cost/funding for participants

Important.

  • The full expenses for meals and accommodation are 350 Euros per participant (there is no participation fee).
  • The organizers will be able to provide a partial or full financial support for a large number of students (usually 70%, depending on the available funds). Therefore, all applicants are encouraged to apply for it.
  • However, before you ask PSI to cover a part of expenses we kindly ask you to make sure that there are no other funds available to you (many universities and research groups pay for their students to attend summer schools).
  • Participants are generally expected to cover their travel expenses themselves.
  • In exceptional cases PSI can cover a part or the full travel costs, but only if previously agreed with the organizers.
  • Please make sure that in your application you provide relevant information regarding the eventual help you need with travel expenses. This information is very important in order to prepare the budget for the school.
  • Any late (later than the deadline above) requests will not be considered. We will let you know about our decision on your requests by the end of May.
