This Erasmus Mundus-recognized Master of Science program prepares you to exploit new technologies to support environmental and societal decision-making affecting the future of our planet. Graduates are now working at companies and government agencies, studying in top PhD programs, and teaching in their home countries. Geospatial information technologies have their roots primarily in three distinct areas: geosciences, computational technologies, and information science.
The three partner sites represent centers of excellence in these areas, recognized at the European and global levels.
The geoscientific and quantitative foundations of Geoinformatics at Münster, the computer science and technology skills taught at Castellón, and the mathematical and statistical methodologies emphasized in Lisbon complement each other in an ideal way to provide a rounded, but compact education in this interdisciplinary technological field.
The composition is a complementary approach of the partners’ different research and educational profiles in an area where each partner is a leader in their own country and recognized internationally.
MASTER
The Master of Science in Geospatial Technologies qualifies for a professional career in the following domains:
- Private sector: GI applications and consulting in the domains of regional planning, landscape planning, financial services industry, energy providing industry, transportation, agriculture and forestry, and retailing/marketing;
- Research: Applied sciences at universities and other research institutions.
- Public sector: GI applications and consulting in local and regional administrations, especially in cadastre and different types of planning (e.g., regional, traffic, ecology).
The Master program targets holders of a Bachelors with a qualification in application areas of Geographic Information (GI), e.g., environmental planning, regional planning, geography, logistics, transportation, marketing, energy provision. We also particularly welcome computer scientists with a keen interest in GI and GI Systems. It is required to have acquired at least basic skills in computer science and/or geoinformatics before the start of the Masters program.
SUMMARY
The three-semester Masters program will enrol up to 32 students per year. Language of instruction is English. Students will attend the first semester in Lisbon or Castellón, the second semester in Münster. The third semester (Master thesis) can be performed at each of the three partner universities.
- The first semester offers different learning paths, addressing the previous know-how and requirements of the students. The courses at UJI focus on the provision of know-how in informatics, new media, and GI basics. UNL provides modules in statistics, data modelling, and GI basics.
- The second semester at the WWU provides basic and advanced courses in GIScience. In addition, courses in additional key competencies (project management, research methods) are provided.
- The Master thesis in the third semester is closely linked to ongoing research projects of one of the partners. Depending on the resources, students can choose each of the three universities for performing the thesis. In case of not attending a semester at each partner university, the thesis will be supervized or co-supervized by the university not attended so far.
The standard period of study is 3 semesters, including all examination requirements and Master thesis. The International Masters program requires 90 ECTS credit points. Based on the successful Master examination, the three universities will award the joint degree “Master of Science” (M.Sc.) with the adjunct “in Geospatial Technologies”.

Description of Ideal Candidate
All applicants applying as a student for the Masters Program in Geospatial Technologies will be assessed against the following formal admission criteria:
- In an evaluation procedure, up to 32 students will be admitted each year (fall/winter semester), half of them starting at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and half at the Universitat Jaume I, Castellón. The overall entry requirements are defined by the respective national laws for Higher Education in Spain and Portugal.
- A requirement for admission is an adequate Bachelor degree of six semesters full time (= 180 ECTS credit points) or more, as recognized by the partner universities in Germany, Portugal, or Spain, for admission to graduate studies. The Masters Program in Geospatial Technologies is recommended to students with relevant degrees in application areas of geographic information, e.g., geography, ecology, urban, regional and environmental planning, logistics/transportation, energy provision, surveying, agriculture, forestry. We also particularly welcome students with a degree in computer science. Within previous studies or professional experience, we expect applicants having acquired basic IT/GI skills already. In case of uncertainty, the Examination board or Masters Program coordinator decide about relevance of the previous degree.
- For programme country (EU) students only: Fulfilling 150 ECTS credit points in an ongoing Bachelor program is NOT sufficient to apply for an Erasmus Mundus grant as partner-country (non-EU) student. For programme country students (EU) ONLY, 150 credits can be accepted for a preliminary approval, if the Bachelor diploma is provided until July 15 of the respective year.
- For students not applying for a scholarship – and on the basis of an individual evalution – 150 credits can be accepted for a preliminary approval, if the Bachelor diploma is provided at the time of enrolment.
- The study program is in English language. Therefore, a TOEFL PBT certificate (minimum 500 points, paper-based), or equivalent, is required. Equivalent can be the TOEFL computer-based (CBT) or TOEFL (iBT), a certificate from other recognised institutions such as IELTS (academics) or Cambridge FCE, a previous Bachelors or Masters program entirely taught in English (to be documented), or English as mother tongue.

Cost/funding for participants
Contribution to travel, installation and all other types of costs:
- 1 000 € per year per scholarship holder resident in a Programme Country for travel costs (2.000 € in total), OR
- 2 000 € per year for travel costs + 1 000 € for installation costs for scholarship holder resident in a Partner Country whose location is situated at less than 4.000 km from the EMJMD coordinating university (5.000 € in total), OR
- 3 000 € per year for travel costs + 1 000 € for installation costs for scholarship holder resident in a Partner Country whose location is situated at 4.000 km or more from the EMJMD coordinating university (7.000 € in total).
- Subsistence costs of 1.000 € per month, 18.000 € in total. Important for residents of Portugal, Germany, Spain: Contribution to subsistence costs must NOT be given to scholarship holders for the EMJMD periods (study /research /placement /thesis preparation) spent in their country of residence.
- Coverage of tuition fees of 3.500 € per semester, 10.500 € in total for Partner Country students, respectively tuition fees of 1.500 € per semester, 4.500 € in total for Programme Country students
- Insurance package, i.e., health insurance.
The scholarship is a full scholarship, meant to cover ALL costs (e.g., tuition fees, travelling, visa costs, accommodation, living expenses, etc.). There will be no further funding.
The study program requires that students provide appropriate laptop computers (laptop with an Intel I3 processor (or similar) with 4Gb of RAM and 200 Gb of HD.). Those students granted by the Erasmus Mundus program who do not possess an appropriate laptop must buy one from the ERASMUS scholarship before starting the study program. If necessary, UJI and UNL can facilitate the procurement.
