Overview
The annual Bergen International Literary Festival for non-fiction and fiction (LitFestBergen), staged for the first time in 2019, presents international and Norwegian literature. By showcasing high-quality non-fiction and fiction from across the globe, this event aims to increase understanding of our world and humanity’s place in it. LitFestBergen is characterised by literary, linguistic, cultural and geographic diversity. It seeks to be bold and innovative, while being simultaneously accessible to a broad audience. Festival participants meet authors from the whole world and from Norway, and acquire insights into literary works which directly address the big and important questions of concern to us all.
As a volunteer at LitFestBergen, you’ll be helping to create an unforgettable festival experience for the audience, the authors and our partners. We need enterprising people who want to contribute during the festival week. You have many interesting roles to choose between, including audience or guest host. Each volunteer will undertake three shifts of between 3-5 hrs long, one of which will be as a stand in/runner.

You’ll gain new experience, a free festival pass and the chance to experience LitFestBergen from the inside.
You have a number of interesting roles to choose between, including audience or guest host. We calculate three working days (three shifts of about five hours each) for all volunteers.
Our volunteer groups
Audience host
- Are you able to spread good humour and energy? Do you want to listen to authors while you work?
- As an audience host, you will welcome people at the entrance, check tickets, show people to their seats and answer their questions about facilities and the programme schedule. You’ll help to prepare the stage for events when necessary.
Guest host
- Are you a good communicator, multilingual, familiar with Bergen and somebody who enjoys being a host? As a guest host, you will meet our guests at the airport, provide information and guide them to transport into central Bergen. You will also welcome guests in the festival reception at the hotel, issue accreditations, communicate information and answer questions.
All-rounder
- Are you service-minded and enjoy working in hectic conditions? Are you a proper all-rounder who is happy to take on shifts of various kinds during the festival?
- As an all-rounder you will provide assistance wherever volunteers are working. You’ll help several teams during each shift, stand in for another volunteer if needed and otherwise assist when an important job must be done very quickly.
Festival promoter
- As part of this team, you’ll be hanging up posters, signs and so forth before the festival. You’ll hand out brochures and other advertising material. This job is largely done before the festival, and can be split up into short shifts.
- We are also looking for volunteers that can distribute catalogues in Oslo, and flyers in Trondheim, Stavanger, Kristiansand, Tromsø, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Berlin and London.
Festival Office
- Are you organized, service minded, detail oriented and able with technologies?
- At the festival office, you will meet and greet the audience, the authors and the press, and provide them with general information about the festival's events.
- You will also sell and issue tickets, or help people to buy tickets through the digital platform Linticket.
Photography
- If photography is your thing, be it your profession, your area of study, or you just love taking photos and have an eye for composition, we would love to hear from you.
- We are looking for volunteers who have the skills to capture the spirit of LitFestBergen, creating insta-stories to be shared in social platforms, or to be published in the photo-gallery of our website.
- You must have your own camera.
