Overview

The International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology is a highly diverse scientific society committed to advancing our understanding of the intersections of psychology and culture. We prioritize the application of scientific methods to deepen our insights into the human condition and to contribute to a more compassionate world for every individual. We reject violence, including terrorism, as a means to resolve interpersonal and international conflicts. We believe that all lives hold equal worth, transcending the many collective and individual identities that distinguish us. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to those who endure physical and emotional suffering, including our members and all those affected by violence, and the increasingly frequent natural and human-induced disasters.

Welcome From IACCP President

Good Morning, Indonesia!

It “feels like just yesterday” that we met in Yogyakarta, Indonesia for the 2002 Congress, at least for some of us “relatively senior” members.  IACCP acts on the international in its name by meeting in nearly every region of the world on a regular basis, and we are so happy to have the opportunity to come back to Indonesia in 2024, just eight years after our previous Asian conference in Nagoya, Japan. Indeed, the sun never sets on IACCP conference locations! (Apologies for that.)

Indonesia has changed so much over the last two decades! The theme of this Congress is Globalization in Context, which is a fitting title for a conference held in a country that has been so strongly affected by globalization. Back in 2002, social scientists were still talking about the Four Asian Tigers (also known as The Four Little Dragons), Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Singapore, the main players in the “Asian Miracle.” These four are still doing well, albeit in the shadow of China, but the real news now is the rise of Southeast Asian nations outside of Singapore, Indonesia in particular. One of the driving forces in the Asian Miracle was the enhancement of educational systems, and Indonesia is now following this path. Indonesia allocates substantial resources to postgraduate education, so you will meet quite a large number of Indonesian postgraduate students at the conference. But in contrast to the Asian Tigers, Indonesia is huge: the fourth most populous nation after India, China, and the United States.1

Globalization is usually associated with modernization; perhaps it is a component of modernization and perhaps modernization is at the core of globalization. Indonesia tracks the “mainline path” of modernization as it advances modern institutions in several sectors, such as health care, the business environment, and scientific research. IACCP is participating directly in the modernization of the science sector by engaging the government’s program to encourage international conferences. We are indeed pleased to make this modest contribution.

About the conference: The organizers have been working hard to create a scientifically stimulating and socially enjoyable experience for us. Check out the list of highly regarded keynote speakers on the conference website and other activities as the scientific and social programs develop.

If you are a postgraduate student, I encourage you to consider applying to the preconference Culture & Psychology School, a multiday workshop experience designed to develop content knowledge and research ideas. It also affords an intensely international experience in which you will meet dozens of truly interesting students from all over the place. Former C&P School students tell us it was a truly formative experience.

If you are beyond those glorious student days, take a look at the pre-conference workshop offerings. You’re never too old to improve your knowledge and upgrade your skills. In either case, please join IACCP to enjoy the benefits of membership and, not incidentally, pay a much-reduced registration fee.

Finally, be aware that the whole of Indonesia--the Indonesian Archipelago--includes over 17,000 islands! That’s a lot of coastline, and as a result, the country has a couple million fishers. That’s a lot of fish. Be healthy; eat some fish while you’re in Bali.
