Overview

Africa Matters is a youth-led organisation dedicated to creating spaces for African expression and robust dialogue by embracing our diversity, identity and history through online platforms, workshops, and summits rooted in Afrocentricity.

Details

The Africa Matters Initiative (Africa Matters) began in South Africa in April 2015 with the aim of empowering young Africans (ages 16-30) from all backgrounds to reject and challenge the notion that Africa is poor and corrupt, and to change the narrative by embracing African identity and actively working to change the continent.

'Africa Matters has taught me that only Africans can teach each other more about Africa.'

The Africa Matters mandate is as follows:

1. Change the African Narrative – Africa Matters aims to shift the narrative of Africa and African diaspora among one another. By engaging in dialogue on African identity, and African stories we can decolonise our minds and recreate and embrace our own narratives.

2. Create a platform for critical engagement – Africa Matters aims to create platforms whereby African academics, civilians, students and community members can share opinions and articles on various matters that affect us daily. Through this dialogue, we ensure that we engage with one another critically over important matters and discover African solutions for African problems.

3. Accountable Media Reporting – The media often excludes Africa from reporting matters on the global community, or when reporting on Africa the media (Western-dominated) tends to report only on the negative aspects of Africa. Through our Facebook page, Twitter and Website we aim to ensure that Africans are educated about African affairs by doing our best to report on
various African related issues – positive and negative.

WHY WAS AFRICA MATTERS CREATED?

The two main reasons for the creation of Africa Matters were:

  • The Global Perception of African Lives as 'Unimportant'
  • The Youth Buy-in to Negative African Narratives
