Overview

African Leadership Academy (ALA) seeks to enroll the most outstanding young leaders, aged 15 - 18, from across Africa and around the world. Only the most passionate and brilliant young leaders can transform the future of our continent. Are you one of them?

Applications open on July 1, 2024 for the Class of 2025.

Details

African Leadership Academy seeks to transform Africa by developing a powerful network of young leaders who will work together to address Africa’s greatest challenges, achieve extraordinary social impact, and accelerate the continent’s growth trajectory.

Africa’s greatest need is ethical and entrepreneurial leadership. Too often, we only invest in addressing the symptoms of poor leadership in Africa: we give blankets, food, and medicine to those impacted by war, poverty, and famine. But these efforts will never stop unless we develop leaders who prevent wars, entrepreneurs who create jobs, and innovators that develop lasting solutions to the root causes of Africa’s problems. We aim to develop the future Nelson Mandela, the next Wangari Maathai, and the African Bill Gates.

Our Model: Identify Potential

  • We comb Africa for youth who show the spark of initiative; who see what can be and strive to make it so.
  • Example: After losing a friend to Cholera, young leader Solomon Martey from Ghana invented a borehole machine using spare parts to pump, purify, and distribute water in his village. His machine has since been adopted by the Ghanaian Ministry of Environment and rolled out in several other rural villages across Ghana.

Our Model: Simulation & Practice

  • Young leaders complete an intensive program of intellectual growth and hands-on leadership development.
  • Example: During his two years at ALA, young leader Jean Fernando Randriamiajason from Madagascar further developed his passion for agriculture by running Aggrinovation – a student enterprise growing and selling fresh produce for the ALA community.

Our Model: Connect to Opportunity

  • Young leaders are guided by powerful network along their path to transformative impact in Africa.
  • Example: Young leader Iman Bermaki from Morocco was able to speak about her aspirations for youth development on the continent at the opening of the annual Mo Ibrahim Forum in Dakar, Senegal. She spoke alongside former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and co-founder of Africa 2.0, Mamadou Toure.

Our values

  • Integrity - We are people of our word, with the courage to do what is right
  • Curiosity - We challenge the status quo and take the initiative to pursue new ideas
  • Humility - We are thankful for opportunities and are aware of our limitations
  • Compassion - We empathize with and care for those around us.
  • Diversity - We respect all people and believe that difference should be celebrated
  • Excellence - We set high standards for our own achievement and celebrate the achievements of others

Selection Process

  • First Round - ALA’s selection process is extremely competitive. The Academy receives several thousand applications from a diverse array of African countries each year. These applicants come from a wide range of social, economic, cultural & educational backgrounds. The application includes short questions and essays and must be submitted with academic transcripts. Please check the admissions timeline below to confirm the appropriate application deadline for you.
  • Finalist Interviews - At this stage approximately 400 finalists are selected to attend finalist events held across the continent. At these events, finalists write entrance exams, participate in group activities & are interviewed one-on-one by the ALA Admissions team. Finalists are also required to submit teacher recommendations.
  • Selection - The hardest part of the selection process: the Academy is only able to select 120 students from the pool of extraordinary finalists to attend the Academy. All finalists will be notified of their admissions status by mid- April.

Cost/funding for participants

ALA is one of the most prestigious education institutions in the world, with a unique financial model designed to enable us to identify, develop and connect Africa’s future leaders. Everyone who applies and is then admitted to ALA, regardless of financial background or nationality, is eligible to receive significant financial assistance in the form of scholarships and loans towards studying at ALA and accessing membership to our lifelong network. The cost of tuition at ALA is USD $30,900 per year.

At ALA, the value of financial awards is determined after admissions decisions have been made. Fees charged to a given student will be based on a family’s financial means. We expect that every family will stretch themselves to finance the ALA education, just as we ask ALA’s network of supporters from around the world to stretch themselves to ensure that every admitted student is able to attend. Students from more financially disadvantaged backgrounds receive more significant financial assistance from ALA, and families with more resources are expected to contribute more to their child’s education at ALA.

Every student will sign the ALA Social Contract – a commitment to contribute to peace and prosperity on the continent for at least 10 years in return for the financial assistance provided by our community.

The all-inclusive cost of $30,900 per annum to attend ALA includes:

  • All-inclusive for fees for a full year covering tuition, accommodation, sports, activities, meals and uniforms.
  • Full access to ALA’s campus facilities including entertainment areas, sports fields, high-speed fibre internet, biometric security control.
  • There is proactive health and wellness care, including private medical insurance for every student.
  • The Explore Johannesburg program, which gets students out and about in our world-class African city, attending cultural and entertainment events.
  • Access to our exclusive and globally renowned University Guidance and “next steps” team, who will advise ALA families on tertiary study, gap year and other options.
  • Exclusive access to the Africa Careers Network, a team at ALA dedicated to finding and securing employment for ALA graduates across the continent with top employers.

All financial assistance awards are determined after an in-depth financial needs assessment, and require the commitment to the Social Contract. If a student breaks their commitment to the social contract, their scholarship will convert into an interest bearing loan, such that they create an ALA experience for another future African leader.
