Overview

STEP travel grants support creative and critical artists and cultural changemakers travelling across Europe and its neighbours, to help foster a society with greater solidarity, participation, equality and a stronger sense of social justice.

Details

Since its launch in 2003 to the present, the programme STEP (previously Step Beyond) has supported more than 2,300 trips across 59 countries – covering the Council of Europe countries and the Euro-Mediterranean partnership countries.

There is no deadline for this grant scheme, so you can apply at any time but at least 60 days before your planned travel. The selection process takes up to one month.

Please note that in case of successful applications, all grants are only paid after the travel has ended and the grantee has submitted all required travel documents. Therefore, careful budgeting beforehand is essential for each project.

Eligibility

Candidates should be from:

Description of Ideal Candidate:

Artist or cultural worker of any contemporary artistic or cultural discipline(individual or representing a cultural or artistic independent organisation) based in Europe or in its neighbourhood.

ECF prioritises support for up-and-coming artists and cultural professionals who have not yet had many opportunities to travel and are not yet established. Therefore individuals aged between 18 and 35 (and/or those in the first ten years of a professional career in their relevant field are more likely to be considered.

Individuals fitting the profile above whose travels correspond with the following types of travel objectives are more likely to be supported:

  • Attending a networking meeting, festival or conference for the first time to expand professional networks;
  • Setting up new cross-border partnerships for upcoming projects (especially in preparation/development phase). Experimental cross-sectoral partnerships are particularly welcome;
  • Engaging in the local arts and culture scene, followed by knowledge sharing with peers at local and/or international level;
  • In exceptional cases we will also support attendance to capacity development training (such as workshops, talent development programmes, etc.).

What is the age limit? The applicant must be at least 18 years old at the time of travel. There is no upper age limit, but we prioritise applicants in the beginning of their professional career and who have not yet had many opportunities to travel.
