Overview

Cedefop's traineeship scheme is mainly for young university graduates as well as PhD students, without excluding those who – in the framework of lifelong learning – have recently obtained a university diploma and are at the beginning of a new professional career.

Details

Aim of the traineeship scheme

Every year, Cedefop offers a traineeship programme that aims to:

  • provide university graduates, PhD students and students with technical qualifications with a unique and first-hand experience of the workings of Cedefop, and more generally of the EU institutions;
  • enable the trainees to acquire practical experience and knowledge of the day-to-day work of Cedefop’s departments and services;
  • provide the opportunity to work in a multi-cultural, multi-linguistic and multi-ethnic environment contributing to the development of mutual understanding, trust and tolerance;
  • promote European integration within the spirit of new governance and through active participation to create awareness of true European citizenship;
  • provide the opportunity to put into practice knowledge acquired during the studies and in particular in specific areas of competence. To introduce the trainees to the professional world and the constraints, duties and opportunities therein.

Timing and duration

There is one trainee intake per year that lasts 12 months, starting on 1 February and ending on 31 January of the following year.

Who we are

Around half of the EU’s population acquires their first job-related skills through VET. Many more go on to develop those skills and to learn new ones through continuing training and other learning at the workplace. This is increasingly important as Europe’s workforce is getting older, but changes to technology and jobs are coming faster.

If the EU is to have the right skills to fill the jobs of today and tomorrow, training must be of high quality. The right policies need to be in place to ensure that people learn the right things; that their skills, no matter if they have acquired them in the formal training system or by working are recognised and that they can have the training they need when they need it.

Organisation of the traineeship

Trainees are placed under the responsibility of a supervisor. The supervisor guides the trainee during his/her traineeship, acting as his/her mentor.

Evaluation reports are completed at the end of the traineeship, both by the trainee and the supervisor. Trainees who have completed the minimum required traineeship period (i.e. 3 months) will receive a certificate specifying the dates of their traineeship period in the relevant department.

Monthly Grant

Trainees are awarded a monthly maintenance grant. The amount of the grant is decided by Cedefop and revised on a regular basis depending on budgetary constraints.

Currently the amount of the grant is:

  • EUR 1,198.38 per month for trainees from abroad, as well as trainees residing in Greece and living more than 50 km from Thessaloniki.
  • EUR 898.78 per month for trainees residing in Thessaloniki prior to the start of their traineeship.

Travel expenses (within certain limits) are also reimbursed.

Disabled trainees may receive a supplement to their grant amounting to half the amount of the grant. The objective of this extra payment is to help disabled trainees to cover extra expenses such as transport, the cost of special accommodation etc which might be required due to their disability.
