Applications are evaluated in the spring and awarded for the following fall or spring term. Letters notifying applicants of their status are mailed in mid-April. Monies will be forwarded after proof of enrollment for the following fall or spring term has been received by FFN.

THE FIRST SCHOLARSHIP FUN FACT:

Renowned Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara (October 9, 1928-July 27, 2016) was the first student to receive a scholarship from Finlandia Foundation. When the scholarship program began in the 1950s it was named for Jean Sibelius, Finlandia Foundation’s first Patron, and awards were given to music students at Sibelius Academy and The Juilliard School.

About Finlandia Foundation

Our mission is to sustain both Finnish-American culture in the United States and the ancestral tie with Finland by raising funds for grants and scholarships, initiating innovative national programs and networking with local chapters.

The birth of the Finlandia Foundation, which formally took place in 1953, had its beginnings back in the war-torn Europe of the 1940s.

After celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2003, the Finlandia Foundation is striving to enhance its past achievements and to become a model in its own right of a small foundation dedicated to the continuing vitality of one ethnic group in the United States. In March 2013 in Pasadena, California, FFN chapter representatives, FFN members, friends of Finland and dignitaries gathered to celebrate the 60th anniversary of FFN and look forward to a vibrant future.
