Overview

The New Israel Fund’s founders wanted to connect with Israel in a way that reflected their progressive values, and thousands of Israelis and supporters of Israel worldwide have joined with us for that reason. We believe in an Israel where the Jewish people achieve self-determination in their homeland and where everyone participates in a shared and just society, predicated on the best values of Judaism, humanism and liberal democracy. Our ideals are equality, tolerance and social justice.

Details

The New Israel Fund’s initial strategy was grantmaking to what were then a small number of fledgling social change and civil rights organizations.

Now, more than $250 million has been granted to more than 850 organizations in 35 years. Ranging from large grants to organizations like the Association of Civil Rights in Israel, our flagship grantee, to small grants to community organizations working on social change at the local level, our grantmaking procedure is rigorous, transparent and based on collaborative partnerships with our grantees.

NIF’s funds today what other, more “mainstream” organizations will support tomorrow. Many of our original initiatives are now funded by Jewish Federations, the JNF, the Jewish Agency, and other institutions and philanthropies.
