Overview
We all have goals, ambitions, and dreams for our global society and we all want to serve as forces for positive change. HNMUN-Latin America is a Model United Nations conference dedicated to bringing educational and cultural experiences to our delegates to empower them to lead and impart their knowledge upon the rest of the world.
Details
Committees at HNMUN-LA consist of a carefully curated set of units that form an integrated whole. The delegate experience is the central concern around which the staff crafts each of the committees, paying close attention to the temporal, geographic, and formal diversity within the organ. This is to ensure that we stay true to our philosophy that Model UN should be an educational endeavor for everyone involved. We hope that HNMUN-LA encourages participants not only to learn something about the countries and positions they represent, but also, perhaps, to discover something about themselves and grow from their discoveries. We sincerely hope that we offer an exciting committee for each and every delegate, who bring the passion and enthusiasm that ultimately gives the conference meaning.
THE ATLAPA CONVENTION CENTER
The ATLAPA Convention Center (ATLAPA) is the largest, most spectacular, exclusive, and complete convention center in the country. Its name originates from the combination of the two oceans that surround the Panamanian isthmus, the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean. It is the ideal and top choice for congresses, conventions, meetings, and many other prestigious events. including the Seventh Summit of the Americas in 2015. This convention center combines Panama's cultural and artistic heritage with technological dispositions and other services to ensure any event held there is a total success.
ATLAPA is located right next to the very center of the city in San Francisco which is a very calm and quiet neighborhood. It's a 20-minute drive from Tocumen Airport. Hotels such as Sheraton and aloft are located right next to ATLAPA, and there are many other hotels within walking distance of the convention center.
In the city, you'll find plenty of restaurants, shopping malls, supermarkets at a close distance from ATLAPA. Multiplaza Pacific Mall, for example, one of the largest shopping malls in Central America is at walking distance from ATLAPA. In case of any given emergency, there is also a hospital near the venue.
History of HNMUN-LA
Founded in 1955, only a decade after the creation of the United Nations, Harvard National Model United Nations (HNMUN) is the largest, oldest, and most prestigious conference of its kind. Staffed entirely by Harvard College undergraduates, HNMUN brings over 3,000 students and faculty together from colleges and universities around the world to simulate the activities of the United Nations. HNMUN offers a unique opportunity to experience the challenges of international negotiation and diplomacy.
In 2012, HNMUN-LA held its first session in Buenos Aires, Argentina, bringing HNMUN's well-established model abroad and adding educational and social initiatives in order to give delegates a distinctly Latin American experience. HNMUN-LA brought its second session to Brasilia, Brazil in 2013. In 2014, HNMUN-LA held its third session in Natal, Brazil. In 2015, HNMUN-LA took its fourth sessions to Lima, Peru. In 2016, HNMUN-LA was organized in in Mexico City, Mexico. The sixth, seventh, and eighth sessions, from 2017 to 2019, were held in Lima, Peru. This year, HNMUN-LA 2020 will be held in Puebla, Mexico.
Throughout the conference, delegates will gain insight into the workings of the United Nations by actively participating in the resolution of important global issues. Participants will not only work with hundreds of other motivated college students with the common goals of furthering international awareness and building consensus, but will also work within a lively cultural and social setting.
The Secretariat cordially invites you to join us for the ninth session of Harvard National Model United Nations–Latin America next January!
