Overview

Discover the spirit of Japan teaching English in the Japanese school system as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) with Interac, the largest provider of ALTs to the Japanese public school system.

Details

We are seeking skilled native-level English speakers to fill elementary, junior high, and high school ALT (assistant language teacher) positions throughout Japan.

Our recruiting representatives will visit and hold interviews/seminars in cities in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, Spain, and the Czech Replublic during summer/autumn 2016. For applicants in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa our recruiting process is completed entirely online. If you currently reside in the Republic of the Philippines, all of our recruiting is handled exclusively by our agent Chesham Recruitment Inc.

If you are a native-level speaker of English and are currently teaching in another country in Asia (China, South Korea, etc.), our recruiting process is completed entirely online in the same manner as applicants from Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Be sure when completing your online application that you include your current address in Asia as opposed to your home country address.

The recruiting process takes a number of months to complete and now is the best time to submit your application to arrive in Japan for the season starting from March 2017. But before you do, we strongly advise you to make yourself familiar with the content on this website, particularly our requirements, when and how to apply, details on moving to Japan, and information about health and well-being.

Interac accepts applications from outside Japan all year round. However, in general, Interac annually recruits from outside Japan during two seasons: spring and fall. These seasons coincide with the Japanese school year, which begins in April, and the end of the extended summer vacation which ends in late-August.

The following diagram indicates the recruiting process and arrival in Japan. It also gives you an indication of the duration of your first contract.

Spring is by far the larger of the two recruiting seasons. Applications for this recruiting season are generally accepted from people residing outside of Japan between June and December of each year. We recommend applying by early November.

The fall intake is the smaller of the two recruiting seasons. Applications for this recruiting season are generally accepted from people residing outside of Japan between January and May of each year. We recommend applying by early May.

Salary

As a regular Interac ALT, you will most likely qualify for a gross salary of between 230,000 and 250,000 yen per calendar month. National income tax and employment insurance is automatically deducted each month; however, city tax and health insurance are not. National income tax is less than 10% of your monthly salary.

In line with Japanese business practices, your salary is deposited into your account on the last day of the following month. For example, your April salary is paid at the end of May. When payday falls on a weekend or national holiday, the salary is deposited into the account on the previous business trading day. Depending on the starting date, the first salary will be received approximately six to eight weeks after you start employment.
