Overview

AIDS 2024, the 25th International AIDS Conference, will take place in Munich, Germany, and virtually from 22 to 26 July 2024. An estimated 15,000 participants from around the world will attend AIDS 2024, and the great majority will do so in person.

Details

The International AIDS Conference is the premier global platform to advance the HIV response. As the world’s largest conference on HIV and AIDS, it sits uniquely at the intersection of science, advocacy and human rights, bringing together scientists, policy makers, healthcare professionals, people living with HIV, funders, media and communities. Since its start in 1985, the conference has served as an opportunity to strengthen policies and programmes that ensure an evidence-based response to HIV and related epidemics.

Conference theme and objectives

AIDS 2024, the 25th International AIDS Conference, will call on the world to come together to re-engage and follow the science. It will define future research agendas, shift latest evidence to action, and chart a new consensus on overcoming the HIV epidemic as a threat to public health and individual well-being.

  1. Presenting evidence: Present and critically discuss latest evidence, including in relation to research and development towards an HIV vaccine and cure, long-acting treatment and prevention technologies, integrated and differentiated models of care, findings from community-led research, monitoring and innovations in service delivery, and analyses of structural and economic determinants of health.
  2. Learning from COVID-19 and HIV: Explore the adaptation of innovations from the response to COVID-19 across science, policy and practice (including new partnerships between public and private stakeholders, industry and community actors and scientists), learning from adaptations from the HIV response that accelerated the response to COVID-19, and consolidating good practice for pandemic preparedness.
  3. Addressing evidence and implementation gaps: Draw attention to new or enduring gaps in the HIV response, such as areas where greater investment is needed in research and person-centred service delivery, and those where the needs of communities remain neglected or ignored.
  4. Moving evidence to implementation: Support evidence-informed action by all stakeholders across geographic and sectoral boundaries through further increased access to latest science, policy and community discussions in a combined in person and virtual format.
  5. Supporting the next generation: Support the next generation of HIV scientists, clinicians and other service providers and advocates through tailored networking, mentorship and leadership opportunities.

Programme at a glance

  • E-poster sessions: E-poster sessions consist of five-minute oral presentations by abstract authors, followed by an interactive moderated discussion facilitated by topic expert moderators. For AIDS 2024, these sessions will take place in person in Munich. In addition, about 1,200 e-posters (each featuring a three-minute recorded presentation), organized by tracks and covering a wide variety of topics, will be available to view on demand in Montreal and via the conference platform.
  • Plenary sessions: Plenary sessions feature leading HIV scientists, policy specialists and community leaders. These distinguished speakers highlight issues and answer delegates’ questions on the latest breakthroughs in the HIV response.
  • Rapporteur session: At the rapporteur session, lead rapporteurs synthesize the highlights of the conference week, focusing on important results presented and the key recommendations put forward.
  • Satellite symposia: Satellite symposia provide a unique opportunity for organizations to host their own sessions as part of the conference programme. Find out more here.
  • Special sessions: Special sessions welcome political leaders, celebrities and international HIV ambassadors who spotlight critical global issues affecting the HIV response.
  • Symposia sessions: Symposia sessions focus on a single, clearly defined issue that requires a rapid solution. Speakers and delegates share experiences, contribute relevant research findings and brainstorm ideas to identify possible ways forward. Sessions also report on new studies and announce forthcoming research and funding initiatives.
