Overview

The International Master in Industrial Management (IMIM) is a multi-site Master Program, designed to provide students with primarily scientific or engineering based educational backgrounds with essential business and managerial skills, relevant to pursuing careers in internationally orientated manufacturing and services industries. The IMIM Programme is offered by three leading Universities: Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), Spain; Heriot-Watt University (HWU) School of Social Sciences (SOSS), in Scotland (UK) and Dubai; Politecnico di Torino, Italy; Northwestern Polytechnical University, China; Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico.

Details

The overall aim of the program is to provide students with a primarily scientific or engineering-based educational background with business skills relevant for pursuing managerial careers in internationally orientated manufacturing and service industries.

The need for such skills is growing rapidly as graduates are increasingly expected to assume broader tasks and responsibilities than most technical universities have traditionally prepared them.

The program covers a broad range of managerial topics and gradually deepens the students’ knowledge of these, with the aim is that its graduates are able to design and manage complex organizations and industrial endeavours, in particular those in which the technology plays a relevant role, as well as to diagnose problematic situations in those organizations, and to conceive and put into practice alternatives of resolution and processes of continuous improvement. In other words, the education of the would be industrial manager of today must acknowledge that her professional work will be developed in the design, implementation, operation and management of organizations of all kinds, manufacturing and production systems among them, within a new context disparate from what has been the norm along the second industrial revolution of the XX century.

The unifying theme industrial management on the face of the challenges of the globalization in an increasingly digital world unfolds into a program structure offering a coherent but also diverse set of study pathways beginning with the principles of management in today’s world and the evolving nature of the value chain and the operations within it, and following with three choices of specialization in key related fields of management – innovation in industry and services, technology and entrepreneurship and the challenge of execution – that will be examined under the light of the new industrial revolution blurring the boundaries of industry and services through an all-encompassing and transversal impact of technology and a dwindling divide between digital-to-physical.

Another key feature of the program is its integrative teaching approach aimed at developing the ability of students to tackle managerial issues in an interdisciplinary manner. The fourth semester is entirely devoted to industry-related project work in close collaboration with companies, forming the basis for a master thesis to be submitted towards the end of the semester.

The duration of the programme is 16 months + Master Thesis.
