UNICRI was established by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) following Resolution 1086, which urged an expansion of United Nations activities in crime prevention and criminal justice. The Institute carries out action-oriented research and training and implements technical cooperation programmes. It aims to assist governments and the international community at large in tackling criminal threats to social peace, development and political stability and in fostering the development of just and efficient criminal justice systems.


The objective of the internship programme is to enhance the educational experience of qualified students from diverse academic backgrounds through practical work assignments and on-the-job experience, to expose them to the work of the United Nations and to provide UNICRI with the assistance of highly qualified students specialized in various professional fields.

The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) accepts a limited number of unpaid interns for 3 semesters - Spring, Summer and Fall - each year. Applications to the Internship Programme are accepted in accordance with the following timeline.

Description of Ideal Candidate:

Students enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree) or students enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (or their equivalents), who intend to study further or to work in a field relevant to UNICRI’s activities are eligible. Those who graduated with a university degree (bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees), if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.


Deadline: The application period is open for one or more cycles a year

Cost/funding for participants:

UNICRI will not bear any cost for the internship and all expenses connected with it must be borne by the intern
