The Joseph Binder Award is an international competition with a focus on graphic design and illustration and was first launched in 1996 by designaustria, the interest organization and knowledge centre for design in Austria. It is named after one of the most outstanding graphic designers and illustrators active in Austria between the two World Wars, who subsequently also revolutionized visual communication in the United States.
Joseph Binder’s motto was: »In design, everything has a function. Design has a representational function. Design has a communicational function. Design has a motivational function.«
Graphic designers, illustrators, advertising agencies and students from all over the world are invited to enter their works realized in 2020 and after by 29 February (early bird) or 17 April 2022.
The Joseph Binder Award is held every two years. The entries are assessed by an international jury of experts. Previous jury panels included such recognized authorities as Cordula Alessandri, Lo Breier, Gerd Dumbar, Fons Hickmann, Freda Sack, Stefan Sagmeister, Niklaus Troxler, and Lars Müller.
The design of this year’s call for entries is realized by the graphic designers of the studio ICARUS from Innsbruck. The deployment of a single style quote by Joseph Binder was not enough for them. In their solution fort he visual appearance of JBA22, they stage his DNA as powerful design diversity.

Description of Ideal Candidate:
Participation is open to graphic designers, illustrators, advertising agencies and to design students from all over the world. They may enter projects in the fields of graphic design and illustration published or realised in 2020 and after. The number of entries is not limited.

Cost/funding for participants:
In each category, a Joseph Binder Award in gold, silver, and bronze will be awarded in the form of trophies: the ball of crumpled paper encased in glass is a symbol for the creative process. In addition, the jury may give away up to three merit awards in each of the graphic design and illustration categories.
Award Ceremony, Catalogue, and Exhibition
The winners will be publicly disclosed on 12 November 2022 within the framework of a festive presentation of the selected and prize-winning entries, to be held in Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier. On the occasion of the award ceremony, a catalogue will appear containing all of the selected and prize-winning entries and introducing the members of the jury. Furthermore, the awarded projects will be presented for a period of several weeks in an exhibition at designforum Wien and afterwards as touring exhibition in several European cities.
In order to support independent, conceptual, scientific, and non-commercial activities in the fields of graphic design and illustration, cash prizes worth a total of 10,000 euros will be awarded to five outstanding projects in the Design Fiction category. Moreover, in this category the Henry Steiner Prize will be awarded to honour a particularly deserving project.
All of the entries selected by the jury will be published in a catalogue. The jury may withhold or reallocate awards and money prizes. All entrants will be notified of the results after both jury processes (June and July 2022).
