Overview

The CNE program is a joint master program in Chemical Nanoengineering offered by three European universities: Aix-Marseille University (France), Tor Vergata University of Rome (Italy), Wroclaw University of science and Technology (Poland).

Chemistry for Nanoengineering is an innovative field of science and technology which is developing very fast. The 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry shows the importance of the research in this area. It has shown that engineering of the Nanomachines is not any more a science-fiction; it is just a beginning of new engineering specialty where the Nano-systems can be numerically designed and chemically synthesized. These new technologies will create a large demand for specialists in this field.

A master about Chemistry and Engineering

This Master Course offers an original program in the highly innovative domain. Skills will be acquired at the strongly interdisciplinary level needed to master emerging Nano-technologies and to develop original concepts and applications aiming at novel engineering breakthroughs in many domains; biomedical nanotechnologies, nanomaterials or applications for environment.

The originality of our program is that it deepens the principles of chemistry and engineering with a special orientation in the field of nanotechnology and a strong address to the industrial reality. Another originality of our program is based on the extensively developed courses dealing with the numerical design and engineering applications of Nano-systems.

Our program is aimed at methodologies applied to Nanoengineering, application-oriented and specifically focused on chemical synthesis and characterization. It aims at the methodology of bottom-up designing of Nano-systems using modelling and chemical synthesis at the Nanoscale.

 

 

All courses are taught in English, so proficiency in English is required. Two of the Partners are engineering Universities (PL and IT), which is important for the program goals towards excellence in nano-engineering innovation. The third partner (FR) has a strong chemical nano-science profile which will allows us to teach our students the chemical fundamentals during the first semester in Marseille. The complementarity among the three partners plays a key role in coherence of the joint program: (you find the description of courses here constantly being updated).

The first year of studies (Marseille : September - January; Wroclaw: February - June) is common for all students. The First semester of the second year (Rome: October - January) allows the students to choose between two options: experimantal one and numerical one.

The Master thesis research project (30 ects, Marseille, Wroclaw, Rome or one of the Partner Institution; February - August) is intended to bring the student in close contact with a multinational and multidisciplinary research environment of a research institute in academia or in industry. The student can choose among the list of proposed relevant research project and work in close collaboration with other researchers. The research project is finalized with a public presentation of a Master’s Thesis in Marseille in September. The Master Thesis project is evaluated by an external international jury.

MASTER OBJECTIVES

  • Assure an interdisciplinary training in the field of nano-engineering, which includes a profound understanding of the chemistry and the methods of synthesis and characterization of nano-materials and nano-systems
  • Give the students expertise in numerical modeling to predict the chemical and physical properties at the nano-scale 
  • Train the students to synthesize, characterise and model objects of the nano-world, in order to understand their properties, using disciplinary knowledge of fundamental sciences and transdisciplinary knowledge of nano-sciences
  • Develop a creative experimental approach to prepare, characterise and model nano-objects (nanostructures, nanomaterials or nano-devices) with unknown properties, or resolve problems related to their identification/application/production
  • Prepare the students for a career in the field of nanotechnology, by offering them a robust experience in this multidisciplinary domain of sciences and engineering
  • Prepare the students to construct and realize individually or in a team all steps of a research and development project in the domain of nano-sciences et nanotechnologies, mobilising various pluridisciplinary parties
  • Enable the students to conceive, prepare and use nano-objects in various professional contexts, integrating ethical environmental and societal challenges
  • Train highly qualified and creative graduates for the labour market with a big capacity to adapt themselves and to find new solutions for technological development (problem solving)
  • Educate a new generation of engineers who can participate in the creation of new high-technology companies

Admission criteria

  • A bachelor or equivalent degree in Science (Chemistry, Physics, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Materials Science…)
  • GPA (Grade Point Average) of at least 75% of the scale maximum is required
  • A good command of English must be certified (minimum language requirements: IELTS 6,2 or TOEFL iBT 91)

Student candidate can apply for an EMJMD scholarship to any of the Erasmus+ Erasmus Mundus courses of their choice (see the EMJMD catalogue), but for a given academic year the number of applications must be limited to maximum three different joint programmes. 

Candidates/Applicants must be informed that if they are selected (proposed for a scholarship/fellowship, put on the reserve list or enrolled on a self-paying basis) their data may be used for the purposes of evaluating the programmes, efficiently manage the projects, and producing statistics. Data could be made available to the EACEA, the European Commission, the European External Action Service staff, as well as to other stakeholders of the Erasmus+ programme, such as Erasmus+ National Agencies, National Erasmus+ Offices and the Erasmus Mundus Student and Alumni Association.

Cost/funding for participants:

Scholarships funded by the European Agency (EMJMD scholarships)

The amount of the scholarships (monthly allowance + contribution to Travel and Installation) given to the selected students differ from the country of origin of the students. 

There are two categories of students:

  1. PROGRAMME Countries students: Students whose citizenship is one of the Erasmus+ Program countries (ie Member States of the European Union (EU) and Former Yougoslav Republic of Macedonia, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Turkey).
  2. PARTNER Countries students: All the students who are not Programme Countries students. 

Contribution to subsistence costs

Monthly allowance for subsistence costs given to the awarded students during the two-years Master program is: 1000 €/month.

* However, the monthly allowance will neither be given to the scholarship holders for the periods spent during the Master (study/research/thesis) in their country of residence, nor to scholarships holders for the periods spent in any Partner Country exceeding 3 months.

Contribution to the travel and installation costs

The contribution to Travel and Installation costs given to the awarded students is:

  • 1.000€ per year for scholarship holders resident in a Programme Country.
  • 2.000€ per year for travel costs + 1.000€ for installation costs for scholarship holders resident in a Partner Country whose location is situated at less than 4.000km from Marseille (for the calculation of the distance follow the link).
  • 3.000€ per year for travel costs + 1.000€ for installation costs for scholarship holders resident in a Partner Country whose location is situated at more than 4.000km from Marseille (for the calculation of the distance follow the link).

Contribution to the Participation Costs

The contribution to Participation costs given to the awarded students is:

  • 4.500€ per year for scholarship holder if citizen of the Programme Country.
  • 9.000€ per year for scholarship holder if citizen of the Partner Country.
