New Zealand offers scholarships to eligible citizens from developing countries to study abroad at a New Zealand education institution or university or at a Pacific university.

Details

The New Zealand Government offers these New Zealand Scholarships

  1. New Zealand Scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate study
    These are full tertiary scholarships for eligible international students to study fulltime at a New Zealand education institution or a Pacific university. 
  2. New Zealand Short Term Training Scholarships for Pacific and Timor-Leste citizens 
    These are short scholarships for skills training and on-the-job work experience for workers from eligible Pacific countries and from Timor-Leste.
  3. New Zealand Short Term Scholarships for citizens of Southeast Asia and Timor-Leste 
    These are short scholarships for skills training for workers from eligible Southeast Asian countries and from Timor-Leste.
  4. New Zealand English Language Training for Officials Scholarships (NZELTO) 
    These are short scholarships for government officials from eligible African and Asian countries to come to New Zealand for English language training.

New Zealand Scholarships for international tertiary students

To apply for a New Zealand Scholarship, you must meet all of the eligibility criteria. You can complete the online questionnaire below to confirm whether you can apply.

The Eligibility questionnaire will check in detail if you meet all of the eligibility criteria. The Eligibility questionnaire will check things such as:

  • Which country you hold citizenship in
  • How long you have been living in your home country
  • How much work experience you have
  • Whether we provide scholarships to your country
  • Whether your intended study aligns to levels and sectors provided to your country

New Zealand Short Term Training Scholarships for Pacific and Timor-Leste citizens 

We fund skills training and work experience in New Zealand

New Zealand Short Term Training Scholarships fund skills training and on-the-job work experience for professionals from eligible Pacific countries and Timor-Leste.

Successful applicants can come to New Zealand to:

  • gain experience at a workplace with a New Zealand employer or government department, or
  • attend a training course at a New Zealand institute of technology, polytechnic, or with another certified training provider.

New Zealand Short Term Training Scholarships are available for these options:

  • Training Certificate (for up to 12 months)
  • Work experience (for up to 12 months)
  • Certificate (for up to 12 months)
  • Diploma (up to 12 months; up to Level 6 of the New Zealand Qualifications Framework)
  • Certain maritime courses (up to 12 months; at Level 7 of the New Zealand Qualifications Framework).

Your chosen training course or work experience:

  • must contribute to the human resource development needs of your country, and
  • align with the following New Zealand priority themes and sectors:

    • Climate Change and the Environment
    • Disaster Risk Management
    • Food Security and Agriculture

Good Governance

    • Governance
    • Law and Justice

HealthEducationEconomic Resilience

    • Economic Resilience / Private Sector

Financial support for scholars

Successful scholars from the Pacific receive:

  • full tuition fees
  • training-related costs
  • return air travel
  • an one-off establishment allowance on arrival
  • accommodation
  • a weekly allowance to cover basic living costs
  • medical insurance for the duration of the scholarship
  • travel insurance
  • approved visa expenses.

Note: This government scholarship does not include the cost of bringing family to New Zealand with you.

New Zealand Short Term Scholarships for citizens of Southeast Asia and Timor-Leste 

We fund skills training for ASEAN and Timor-Leste workers

Professionals from eligible Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries and Timor-Leste can apply for a scholarship to take a short professional training course in the following themes and sectors:

Good Governance

  • Public sector leadership

Climate Change and Resilience

  • Renewable energy
  • Geothermal energy
  • Agriculture

These short courses aim to share New Zealand’s expertise in renewable energy, geothermal energy, agriculture and public sector management with professionals and workers in developing countries. Reputable education institutions in New Zealand deliver these short training courses to successful scholars. Courses are two to four weeks long.

If we approve your scholarship, you will receive a Letter of Offer with the conditions of your scholarship. All scholars must accept and abide by these conditions.

New Zealand English Language Training for Officials Scholarships - Asia 

The New Zealand Government offers English language training for government officials from Asia (NZELTO Asia). We currently offer three courses each year. Officials come to New Zealand for up to five months to improve their English and to build links with other participants and New Zealand.

Each course has a theme

Each course intake focusses on a theme or special topic. Examples of past themes are agriculture and trade, strengthening resilience, renewable energy, education, and good governance. Suitable applicants must have a technical job or policy job that relates to the current theme.

To apply, you must be a citizen from one of these countries:

Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Mongolia, Myanmar, Timor-Leste, Viet Nam

New Zealand English Language Training for Officials Scholarships - Africa

The New Zealand Government offers English language training for government officials from Africa and Palestine (NZELTO Africa). We currently offer two courses each year. Officials come to New Zealand for ten weeks to improve their English and to build links with other participants and New Zealand.

To apply, you must be a citizen from one of these countries:

Algeria, Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Cote d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Gabon, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Palestine, Republic of the Congo, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Togo, Tunisia.
