Overview

We are convinced that all young people should have the opportunity to experience Europe – regardless of their social and regional origin, their educational background or their financial possibilities.

About the project

As part of our travel grants, recipients travel the continent with an Interrail Global Pass and get to know their European neighbors. During their journey, they engage with current political or social issues and document their findings in a video report. With their reports, they are the ones who are boldly telling new stories about Europe, making it more inclusive.

Goals and topics

Our travel grants promote encounters and exchange between young people across Europe and aim to strengthen European cohesion.

Each year, we set a thematic framework that reflects our focus on democracy, participation, and diversity in Europe. However, the grant recipients can choose their own and individual topics within this scope.

Why travel grants?

Europe means diversity. Experiencing this diversity is corner stone of European integration. Many young Europeans, however, do not get to travel internationally. For them, Europe remains unknown. By awarding travel grants, the Schwarzkopf Foundation seeks to enlarge the number of young travelers in Europe, which in turn fosters European integration and peaceful cooperation on our continent.

What is expected of me?

Our travel grants enable young Europeans to experience Europe. This should always take place by addressing a specific topic or question. The bigger topic is provided by our project partners (more on that below), the specific research focus, however, is up to you.

All travelers should conduct their independent research (interviews, surveys, etc.) and document their findings. The documentation can take the form of a written report, but can also be a series of photographs, a series of meaningful Instagram posts, a vlog, or a diary. You are responsible for planning your trip, finding accommodation, and selecting your travel destinations. All travels should be completed individually, e.g. not with friends or as part of a bigger group.

After the journey, our grantees are requested to submit a detailed report, not only reflecting on their experiences and impressions from their trips, but also explaining how they approached their research topic and what they found out.
