Overview

The FIRST Global Challenge is an olympics-style, international robotics competition that takes place in a different country each year. FIRST Global invites each nation to send a team to build and program a robot to compete. Teams work together to complete tasks in a game themed around one of the greatest challenges facing our planet, including the 14 Grand Challenges for Engineering, in an effort to foster understanding and cooperation among the youth of the world as they use their abilities to solve the world’s problems. The challenges we face as a global society need to be solved, and the next generation can meet the task — together.

Thousands of students from more than 190 countries will unite in Singapore to collaboratively compete in a thrilling game highlighting the importance of renewable energy. Singapore is at the forefront of sustainability initiatives, making them a great choice for this year’s theme.

Details

FIRST Global believes that by making science and technology as exciting as any other sport, we can inspire the world’s two billion youth to pursue STEM fields and be the leaders who collectively solve our planet’s most pressing problems.

Hydrogen Horizons Theme

As our dependence on energy continues to grow, it becomes increasingly important to innovate the solutions that will ensure a cleaner and more equitable energy future around the world. Renewable energy comes from natural sources that are continually replenished, including the sun, wind, heat within the earth, and water. This year’s theme calls on FIRST Global teams to reimagine the future of energy and create more sustainable ways to power our planet.

The 2023 FIRST Global Challenge focuses specifically on the role of hydrogen in the planet’s renewable energy and reduced carbon future. Hydrogen-based energy technologies allow for enhanced methods of carrying and storing the energy generated from renewables.

Hydrogen Horizons Game

The Hydrogen Horizons game challenges shifting alliances of three national teams to work together to build renewable energy networks, demonstrating the collective effort required to develop sustainable energy. Teams must navigate their robots in the simulated game to produce hydrogen and use it to store, transport, and convert energy.

New Technology Experience

The New Technology Experience (NTE) is a means for the student community to stay current with cutting edge technology. The 2023 FIRST Global Challenge NTE— Energy Evolution — takes FIRST Global teams beyond the Hydrogen Horizons game. In this component of the season, students learn about all types of renewable energy, including hydrogen technologies, and then develop their own innovative solutions within their communities and nations to create a cleaner energy future.

2023 NATIONAL TEAMS

The FIRST Global Challenge is a truly international robotics event, with nations around the world welcomed to participate. Our spirit of openness is a core FIRST Global value, grounded in our belief that while politics often divides, technology unites. We seek to bring together youth from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences and inspire and motivate them to become the leaders and innovators of the future, working together to build a better world.
