Overview

The Institute for Field Research (IFR) was created in March 2011 by a group of leading academic archaeologists (see our Board of Directors). Operating as an independent, nonprofit academic organization has allowed us to break down traditional institutional barriers and deliver archaeology field schools to students regardless of the university in which they matriculate. Furthermore, by working with leading scholars from universities around the world, the IFR delivers a broad range of regional and temporal programs while ensuring excellence in research and teaching. Students are no longer limited to the expertise of faculty members at their home campus, and faculty can recruit the best students from across the world.

Details

The IFR signed an affiliation agreement with UCLA Extension in 2015. UCLA is a top ranked research institution recognized globally as a leading university (see the National Academy of Sciences rankings). Through this agreement, students receive 12 quarter credit units (equivalent to 8 semester units) for attending any of our field schools. UCLA Extension courses provide unit credits toward bachelor’s degrees across all campuses of the University of California and the California State University System. They may also be accepted at many academic institutions nationwide.  Students are strongly encouraged to discuss unit transferability with their home institution adviser before committing to any of the IFR field schools.
