About

The Lumen Prize celebrates the very best art created with technology through a global competition. Since it's launch in 2012, it has awarded more than US$100,000 in prize money and created opportunities worldwide for the artists who have been longlisted, shortlisted or won Lumen Awards. Lumen is run by Lumen Art Projects, a UK-based digital arts champion which builds these opportunities by curating exhibitions, commissions and events for art venues, cultural institutions and public spaces around the world as well as delivering consultancy services for partners globally.

A Short History

The Lumen Prize and Lumen Arts Projects were founded in rural Wales by Carla Rapoport in 2012 and 2018 respectively.  A former financial journalist, Carla’s goal is to widen the enjoyment, understanding and appreciation of art created with technology while widening the opportunities for artists working in this field globally.

Description of Ideal Candidate

What kind of art is eligible?

  • All art is eligible as long as it engages with technology in some form. You do not need to be a digital artist or be able to design software to enter. To see which category to enter you can read the category descriptions. If you have any questions regarding whether your work suits the Lumen Prize, please email jack@lumenprize.com.

What kind of equipment or software can artists use?

  • Artists can use any equipment, there is no limit!

How does the judging work?

  • The judging of the Lumen Prize is done in two stages. The longlist is determined by our International Selectors Committee, made up of academics, curators and art critics. This longlist is reviewed by our Jury Panel, who select the finalists and winners of each category. By having these two rounds of judging we insure all entries submitted to the Lumen Prize are given the time to be evaluated fairly.
