Course information
The Summer School ‘The European Union, the United Nations and Global Governance’ will focus on a range of topics relevant to interactions between the European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN) and the EU’s role within current patterns of global governance.
It will include lectures by eminent scholars in European Integration, International Organization and Global Governance. The Summer School has been initiated by and will be conducted under the academic leadership of Professor Madeleine Hosli (in collaboration with several colleagues from Leiden University and external experts).
Among the themes covered are the:
- EU and interactions with the UN;
- EU and global security governance;
- EU and multilateralism, challenges to global climate governance, migration;
- EU and global economic, fiscal and tax governance.
The Summer School will consist of lectures, seminars, short presentations by the participating students, a simulation game and a visit to EU institutions in Brussels (all offered live if circumstances allow for this, with ‘remote’ as a backup option).
Structure and Programme
The overall structure of the Summer School comprises a variety of learning activities and teaching methods, including lectures, seminar discussions, a panel and a workshop, group activities and a presentation, a simulation game (practical implementation of a ‘real world’ scenario by participants) and institutional visits (EU institutions and UN Regional Information Center). All of the activities will be led by teaching staff that are leading academic experts in their respective fields. Their input will be complemented by policymakers and practitioners from both the EU and the UN.
The pedagogical approach is geared to the level of Master and PhD students and involves interactive teaching, stimulating the Summer School participants to actively engage in the materials. Given the disciplinary expertise of the academics involved in the teaching, there will be multidisciplinary synergies in the ways the various topics related to the EU in global governance will be addressed.
