The YSEALI Smart Cities Regional Workshop will be a “Hybrid Program” which combine online session and in-person activities. We bring together 50 participants who are between the ages of 20-35 and are registered YSEALI network members from all ASEAN member nations as well as Timor-Leste. This workshop aims to enhance participants’ knowledge of smart cities as well as to explore how to involve civil society and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in smart city development in the region.

Details

Purpose

The purpose of “YSEALI Smart Cities Regional Workshop” is to expand participants’ understanding of opportunities and risks of smart cities, as well as to learn from best practices around the world. The ultimate aim is to foster a strong network among participants and to encourage greater involvement from young leaders, civil society, and SMEs in smart city development, while increasing capacity of future leaders to develop sustainable solutions to urbanization challenges in the region, using digital and other tools.

Location

Ideal location to host the YSEALI Smart Cities Regional Workshop, Bangkok – Thailand is one of the foremost potential smart cities in the region. It was included into the first cohort of ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN) in April 2018, and has hosted the ASEAN Smart Cities Network Conference and Exhibition in August 2019.

Furthermore, Thailand has taken steps towards realizing digital economy and the development of smart cities is among its top priorities. The government’s digital initiative has the ultimate aim to see Thailand prosper into a high-income nation with an economy driven by innovation and value-based industries. As such, we propose Bangkok to host this year’s YSEALI Smart Cities Regional Workshop.

The YSEALI Smart Cities Regional Workshop provides:

  • Round trip economy class air ticket or local transportation from hometown to Bangkok, Thailand;
  • Accommodation in a twin room (shared with YSEALI participants) during the workshop dates;
  • Meals which includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner during the workshop;
  • Round trip of transportation from Suvarnabhumi or Don Muang International Airport to the workshop venue;
  • Sim card and insurance during the workshop;
  • No registration and activity fee required.

Project Idea Pitch

  • Group Brainstorming of Project Assignment: Participants will be split into 6 groups of 8-10 people who have the same interests, or have been working on same focal area. Group members will be allocated by the Organizing Team based on the project that each participant handed in during the application process. During this session, each group will brainstorm and work together to select the most impactful project for their community or city. All the groups will be guided by the mentors to further explore ideas and develop new possibilities for their projects. The pitching presentation, either in PowerPoint or Flipchart format, will be developed during group brain storming sessions. Towards the end of the Workshop, each group will present their project in the pitching competition where the top three winners will get seed grants for project implementation.
  • Project Idea Pitching Competition: Participants will have time to finalize their project and prepare their prototype and pitching presentation. Judges and participants will hear three-minute pitch from each group. The judge panel will consist of representatives from U.S. Embassy, speakers, and FINSEDT. Three winning teams will receive small seed grants to implement project in their country/ community as planned. The Organizing Team will continue to monitor and follow up on each team’s progress, conduct site visits and provide a report to the U.S. Embassy.
