The YoungEd Challenge
The education sector skills supply gap needed to meet the demands of educating Africa's next generation poses a challenge that must be addressed to position the continent for the future.
- Of Africa's population is under 25 years old, with the median age on the continent of 19 years.
- Education jobs are required in Sub-Saharan Africa to meet SDG4 2030 goals.
- Yet, Sub-Saharan Africa has the most severe shortage of teachers and an aging education sector workforce with high attrition rates.
Our Commitments
For us, the call to action to strengthen professional development in the Education sector is so clear. And YoungEd Africa exists to help solve "The YoungEd Challenge" through commitments in 2 broad areas.
- Investments: Providing financial and non-financial support to young African educators who are passionate about improving Africa's education ecosystem.
- Partnerships: Fostering public -private partnerships to harness collective strengths of stakeholders towards developing the next generation of Africa's Educators.
Strategic Goals
Through these areas of commitments, we pursue two main strategic goals that guide our programmes and initiatives.
- Raise interests of more Young Africans in developing careers in Education.
- Reduce barriers to professional development in the fields of education.
Programmes
YoungEd Africa programmes are structured to support educators in 3 key thematic areas that we believe are critical to positioning them for the future.
- Professional Development: Through our Professional Development programmes our aim is to invest in up-skilling aspiring and current educators with relevant knowledge and skills for improved education delivery and preparedness for the future.
- Internet & Data Initiatives: We seek to achieve two goals in this thematic area:
- reduce affordability barriers to accessing vast online resources that support research;
- improve the quality and quantity of sector level data critical to programme and policy decisions.
- Media & Advocacy: As critical levers for advancement, our goal is to use the tools of media and advocacy to bring focus to developments within Africa’s education sector and its impacts, challenges as well as opportunities in preparing Africa for the future.
