Overview
How to handle negotiations in complex political contexts? This course combines theoretical elements, experiences from different conflict contexts and practical methods aimed at developing skills for such negotiations.
Details
Course Description
Different societies face deep political crises, such as unfruitful dialogues between the government and the opposition, major challenges to reach wide societal consensuses, frequent waves of citizen protests or even violent and armed conflict. Overcoming those scenarios demands special skills. Those provide the basis to analyze the on-going situation, to prevent the emergence of new crises and to establish a working relationship between the conflicting parties in the future.
By combining theoretical elements, experiences from different conflict contexts and practical methods, this course aims at discussing key tools for addressing complex political contexts and negotiating in such.
As a participant, you will:
- Become familiar with a varied set of tools in conflict resolution;
- Identify elements that should be incorporated in a sound conflict analysis;
- Approach political crises strategically;
- Go beyond the zero-sum approach that characterizes many conflicts and develop a longer-term perspective in the relationship between the parties involved;
- Exchange experiences and become part of a community of practice.
Course structure
The Complex Political Negotiations Course consists of preparatory readings and a 3-day on-site course (Wednesday to Friday) at the kHaus in Basel. The course schedule is 9h00-12h30 and 14h00-17h30 (may be subject to change). Half-hour coffee breaks during both sessions offer the perfect opportunity to get to know your fellow participants better and to expand your professional and academic network. The detailed program will be sent to participants in due time.
This course is open to the public, but also part of the CAS Peacebuilding Essentials, a postgraduate program that is offered annually by swisspeace and the University of Basel.
