COURSE DESCRIPTION

Mediators bring conflict parties to the negotiating table and support them in finding agreements. While mediation used to be a domain reserved exclusively for diplomats and UN envoys, in the last decade the range of actors in the mediation field has broadened and the field has professionalized. In this course, participants gain insights into the complex challenges of peace mediation.

Your benefits:

  • Familiarize yourself with the most important concepts and approaches of negotiation and mediation.
  • Understand the main dimensions of mediation process design and their applications in cases.
  • Understand the Swiss approach to peace mediation.
  • Practice negotiation and mediation skills.
  • Exchange experiences and become part of a community of practice.

Course structure

The Mediation & Peacemaking Course consists of preparatory readings and a 3-day on-site training (Wednesday to Friday) at the University of Basel. The course schedule is 9h00-12h30 and 14h00-17h30 (may be subject to change). Half-hour coffee breaks during both sessions offer the perfect opportunity to get to know your fellow participants better and to expand your professional and academic network. The detailed program will be sent to participants in due time.

This course is open to the public, but also part of the CAS Civilian Peacebuilding Essentials, a postgraduate program that is offered annually by swisspeace and the University of Basel and runs from September to August.

Course methodologies

Our faculty uses innovative teaching techniques to enhance the learning experience. These include:

  • expert inputs and exchange with experienced international scholars and practitioners
  • exercises in which participants apply the acquired tools in case studies and relate them to their own experiences
  • peer exchange during which participants share best practices and develop strategies to face potential challenges in practice or research
  • self-study in which participants deepen their knowledge on peace mediation
