The Aga Khan University is a private, autonomous university that promotes human welfare through research, teaching and community service initiatives. Internship placements are offered in East Africa, South and Central Asia, Europe, and North America with international development agencies of The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) – One of the world’s largest development networks that work on programmes dedicated to improving the quality of life and opportunities of vulnerable communities and spans across 30 countries.

​P​rogramme Structure

AKU-VIP is designed in a way that will give students structure, support, and flexibility throughout their internship. Internships are 12-weeks long, with an expected time commitment of at least 15 hours per week, where students contribute through project-based work to their chosen host institutions. ​​​​​

Eligibility criteria

  • Currently enrolled or recent graduate (within one year) in an undergraduate (2nd year or above), Master’s, or Ph.D. programme from an accredited university.
  • Have good academic standing (minimum of 2.5 GPA or its equivalent).
  • Able to commit at least 15 hours a week.
  • Open to work with flexible time zones (internship positions could be with organizations from different continents).

Financial assistance

​The AKU-VIP offers two types of financial assistance: financial aid, and merit-based scholarships. Applicants will be invited to apply for only one form of financial assistance once they are successfully shortlisted and invited for an interview. They will be asked to submit an application form and provide relevant documentation to support their statements. Note that the application for financial assistance will not affect the final selection of interns.​
